South Africa's most expensive safari lodge, Royal Malewane, reaches $4,300 per person sharing per night during the 2027 holiday period. [4]
The best luxury lodges in South Africa 2027 range from about $750 to $5,000 per person per night. Greater Kruger offers Big Five drives and private reserves, while Sabi Sand leads in high-end villas and river views. Compare 2027 rates early, because holiday dates can sell out well ahead.
Best Luxury Lodges in South Africa 2027: Rates Compared is a guide to high-end safari stays, nightly prices, and booking choices. It focuses on private reserves near Kruger, the Sabi Sand, and other leading safari areas. The guide uses published 2027 planning rates available in October 2026.
Luxury safari pricing is wide. A planning guide places South African safari costs between $185 and $563 per day. Kruger accommodation starts at $420 per day for four-star stays and $600 for five-star stays. [2] Premium private lodges cost far more, but they often include meals, drinks, transfers within the reserve, and daily game drives.
Royal Malewane, Camp Jabulani, and Lion Sands Ivory are identified as South Africa's only Five Star Premium lodges. All three sit in Greater Kruger private reserves. [1] Their rates reflect private concessions, strong guiding teams, high service levels, and all-inclusive stays.
This guide helps you compare the real difference between a $960 lodge and a $4,300 lodge. It also explains what each rate includes. Prices can change with dates, room type, exchange rates, and availability, so use the figures as planning points rather than final quotes.
Quick answer: The best luxury lodges in South Africa 2027 start near $750 per person sharing per night and rise above $4,000 for top holiday rates. Choose Greater Kruger for private Big Five drives, Sabi Sand for riverfront villas, and Tswalu Kalahari for a different desert setting. Confirm inclusions before you pay.
The best luxury lodges in South Africa 2027 are high-end safari properties with private guiding, all-inclusive dining, and access to strong wildlife areas. The top names include Singita, Londolozi, MalaMala, Royal Malewane, and Tswalu Kalahari. [3] Greater Kruger remains the clearest choice for classic Big Five viewing.
Greater Kruger private reserves offer a more private safari than the public park roads. Royal Malewane operates in Thornybush, Camp Jabulani operates in Kapama, and Lion Sands Ivory operates in the Sabi Sand. These three lodges hold the Five Star Premium label in the cited comparison. [1]
Kruger National Park remains the main reference point for safari planning in the region. Private reserves next to or within the Greater Kruger area can offer different rules, road access, and guiding styles. That difference matters when you want close sightings and fewer vehicles.
Five Star Premium lodges offer Big Five game drives, all-inclusive packages, and expert guides. [1] Many rates also cover meals and local drinks. In Sabi Sand, published listings generally include two game drives per day and all meals. [7]
SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators and authentic traveler reviews. Compare verified South Africa safari packages and 2027 lodge options before choosing a room or reserve.
A private reserve is not the same as a standard park stay. Private reserves often give guides more freedom to follow animal tracks off public roads. The result can feel more personal, but the nightly rate usually rises with that access.
Best lodges in Kruger National Park can suit travelers who want a wider choice of prices. A private lodge suits guests who want fewer planning tasks. A park lodge can work better for travelers who prefer flexibility and a lower daily cost.
Luxury lodge rates in 2027 start at about $757 per person sharing per night for Five Star properties, while holiday rates at Royal Malewane reach $4,300. Sabi Sand rates in one published list run from $1,590 at MalaMala Camp to $3,870 at Singita. [1][4] The gap reflects room type, reserve, season, and service level.
| Name | Price | Duration | Rating | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phinda Zuka Lodge | From $960 per person sharing per night | Two to four nights | Not stated in source | High-end private reserve stay |
| MalaMala Camp | From $1,590 per person sharing per night | Two to four nights | Not stated in source | Sabi Sand game drives |
| Singita | Up to $3,870 per person sharing per night | Two to four nights | Not stated in source | Top-tier Sabi Sand luxury |
| Royal Malewane | Up to $4,300 per person sharing per night | Two to four nights | Five Star Premium | Private guiding and premium service |
| Five Star Premium lodges | From $757 per person sharing per night | Two to four nights | Five Star Premium | All-inclusive Big Five safari |
The rates above come from different planning sources, so they do not form a single fixed tariff. The $757 figure is a published starting rate for Five Star lodges. The $960 to $4,300 figures come from 2027 holiday planning rates converted at R16.4 to the US dollar. [1][4]
Sabi Sand lodge rates in the cited list include meals, local drinks, and game drives. Reserve levies are extra. [4] Another Sabi Sand listing says lodges generally include two game drives each day and all meals. [7] Ask for the full cost before booking. A low headline rate can exclude levies, transfers, premium drinks, or special activities.
Four-star and five-star planning rates offer a useful budget check. A 2027 comparison lists Kruger rates starting at $420 per day for four-star accommodation and $600 per day for five-star accommodation. [2] These figures sit below the premium private lodge rates, which makes them useful for travelers who want comfort without a top-tier price.
For a clear budget match, request quotes from verified safari operators for your 2027 dates and compare what each rate includes. Read authentic reviews before you decide.
Choose Greater Kruger for classic Big Five viewing and private reserve access. Choose Sabi Sand for high-end river views and villa-style rooms. Choose a wider South Africa route when you want safari combined with coast, cities, or a second wildlife region.
Greater Kruger private reserves suit travelers who want a focused safari. Royal Malewane, Camp Jabulani, and Lion Sands Ivory are the three lodges named as Five Star Premium properties in the cited source. [1] Their packages include Big Five drives, all-inclusive service, and expert guides.
A seven-day Kruger safari plan works well for travelers who want time for more than one lodge. Two nights can feel rushed. Four nights at one property gives you several dawn and afternoon drives, with time to rest between them.
Sabi Sand is a strong fit for travelers who want lodge comfort close to wildlife action. Lion Sands Ivory Lodge has eight one-bedroom villas with private pools and river views. Its cited starting rate is $1,587 per person sharing per night. [1]
MalaMala Camp and Singita sit at the higher end of the Sabi Sand price list. MalaMala starts at $1,590 in one cited 2027 comparison, while Singita reaches $3,870. [4] The price difference is large, so room style and included services deserve close attention.
Phinda Zuka Lodge appears at $960 per person sharing per night in the cited 2027 holiday list. [4] That makes it a useful comparison for travelers who want a luxury lodge without the highest Sabi Sand rates.
Addo Elephant safari packages can suit travelers building a longer South Africa trip. The Addo Elephant National Park area gives a different setting from Greater Kruger. It can pair well with coastal travel around Algoa Bay.
Ulusaba Safari Lodge and Rock Lodge are closed for rebuilding until April 2027. [7] Travelers planning an early 2027 trip should remove those properties from their shortlist until reopening details are confirmed.
Madikwe Game Reserve safari packages offer another route for comparing private reserve stays. Always check the exact lodge, dates, room type, and transfer plan in the quote.
Start by setting a nightly budget, then choose the reserve and room style. A good plan compares the full package cost, not only the advertised lodge rate. You also need to check transfers, levies, meals, drinks, and game drive times.
Use $750 per person sharing per night as a starting point for Five Star Premium planning. Use $960 as a reference for Phinda Zuka Lodge. Use $1,590 to $3,870 as a Sabi Sand planning range, and reserve $4,300 for the highest cited Royal Malewane holiday rate. [1][4]
These numbers help you sort options quickly. They do not replace a written quote. A lodge can price different room categories at very different levels, even on the same date.
Room style changes the experience and the cost. Lion Sands Ivory offers one-bedroom villas with private pools and river views. [1] Ask whether the room has a plunge pool, private deck, outdoor shower, or direct river outlook. Those features matter more for couples who plan to spend time at the lodge.
Confirm the number of game drives each day. Sabi Sand listings generally include two daily drives and all meals. [7] Ask if the lodge includes walking, private vehicles, sleep-outs, or specialist wildlife drives. Do not assume these activities come with the base rate.
Ask how you reach the lodge from the nearest airport. Confirm whether the price includes road transfers or charter flights. A low lodge rate can become expensive when transport sits outside the package.
SafariFind lists verified tour operators, packages, and authentic reviews. Compare the written itinerary with the lodge rate. A useful quote should show the travel dates, room type, meals, drinks, game drives, levies, transfers, and cancellation terms.
Luxury safari planning rewards careful questions. You are paying for time, access, and service. Make sure the quote describes all three in plain language.
Luxury lodges in South Africa cost about $750 to $5,000 per person per night in 2027. Published examples include $757 for Five Star Premium starting rates, $1,590 at MalaMala Camp, and $4,300 at Royal Malewane during the 2027 holiday period. [1][4]
Royal Malewane, Camp Jabulani, and Lion Sands Ivory are identified as South Africa's only Five Star Premium lodges in the cited comparison. All three are in Greater Kruger private reserves and offer Big Five drives, all-inclusive packages, and expert guides. [1]
Many luxury lodge rates include accommodation, meals, local drinks, and game drives. Sabi Sand listings generally include two game drives per day and all meals, while reserve levies may cost extra. Confirm transfers, drinks, activities, and levies in writing before booking. [4][7]
Sabi Sand often costs more than standard Kruger accommodation because it uses private reserve lodges and high-end room types. Published planning rates start at $1,590 at MalaMala Camp and reach $3,870 at Singita, while five-star Kruger planning rates start at $600 per day. [2][4]
Lion Sands Ivory is a strong honeymoon choice because its one-bedroom villas have private pools and river views. Royal Malewane also suits couples seeking private guiding and all-inclusive service. Compare the room, transfer, and activity details rather than choosing by lodge name alone. [1]
Use SafariFind to compare safari packages, verified tour operators, prices, and authentic reviews. Request a quote for your dates, then check room type, inclusions, levies, transfers, closure dates, and cancellation terms before you pay.
The best luxury lodges in South Africa 2027 cover a wide price range, from about $757 per person sharing per night to $4,300 during the highest cited holiday period. Greater Kruger is the best starting point for Big Five drives and private reserve access. Sabi Sand is the stronger choice for river views, private pools, and top-end lodge design.
Start with Phinda Zuka if you want a published rate near $960. Compare MalaMala, Singita, and Lion Sands Ivory if you want Sabi Sand. Choose Royal Malewane when private guiding and premium service matter more than budget. Check every inclusion, especially reserve levies and transfers.

"We made our reservations with 50% down-payment way back in Feb-26, 4 months before our trip in June and balance 50% one month before departure from Singapore. We were not sure and worried a bit whether things would turn out as described and promised, as this is our first ever trip to South Africa. All our worries disappeared from the moment we were picked up upon arrival according to the itinerary, and subsequent daily trips were excellent in view of timing, routes, transports, accommodations, meals, and to the local guides and drivers assigned. Everything is above and beyond our expectations, and we sincerely thank Safari Tailors for providing us such a memorable trip of our life!"

"Communications with Mack via email were swift and comprehensible. We were picked up at the airport on arrival by our guide, Thomas, who would be with us for the whole week. We signed up for a budget camping safari, and we had a great time! The campsites were nicer than I thought they would be, and the Kiliholidays team did a great job of taking care of us the whole trip. Thomas was very accommodating, and our 'stomach engineer' did a fantastic job the whole trip. My partner and I were very impressed by the quality of the food. Thomas was an incredible driver; a few times we had to stop and help other drivers who were stuck! This was my second visit to East Africa, and I will definitely book with Kiliholidays for my third trip :) A few tips for other travelers: The sleeping mattress was a bit thin for me (my partner had no trouble!), but I found that sleeping on my back instead of my side helped. If you have sensitive hips, I'd recommend bringing something to use as a cushion, or possibly arranging for an extra mattress. The tent was high-quality and the sleeping bags were warm. We stayed in Mto wa Mbu a few nights and it was quite hot there. We brought sleeping sacks (very thin) and used those instead. Bring LOTS of insect repellent and use it often (biting flies in the daytime, mosquitoes at night). Same with hand sanitizer (public campsite toilets don't usually have soap). Granola bars are a good idea, too, if you like to snack between meals. There's not a lot of access to ice, so if you like an evening adult-beverage, just ask your guide to stop before you leave Arusha to pick up some wine. We picked up a 5-liter box of South African wine for about 25euros and it was very convenient (bring your own cups!)."
5★ - "This is the second time I have traveled with my family with GoExplore. The first time was an amazing Uganda experience (already reviewed) and this second experience with my husband to Kenya was equally amazing. Brian org" - Sarah • Verified review
"This is the second time I have traveled with my family with GoExplore. The first time was an amazing Uganda experience (already reviewed) and this second experience with my husband to Kenya was equally amazing. Brian organized organized both tours for me and tailored them according to my wishes. As this is still the time of unsure flights and Covid difficulties, he was easily able to adapt to some changes with travel that were beyond our control. GoExplore is a boutique business that is very personalized and offers you the equal and more than a large corporate operator. The price point is compatible with group tours but you will have your own personal driver and guide for yourself and there is nothing to compare with this luxury. Because of that, you will also be able to adapt your days schedule if you wish according what you want and not what is a groups plan. We were completely happy and satisfied with all aspects of our travel (on both trips). Brian knows the safari tour industry and is constantly working to improve the business, his knowledge about lodges, the parks, restaurants and all minute aspects of the tour. He will be able to personally attest to the quality of whatever product he is recommending to you. Sammi was our driver in Kenya and we can only say that he was amazing. He knew more about wildlife (and every birds name and details) than an encyclopedia, was an amazingly adept driver in sometimes rough conditions (traffic, rough park roads, etc.) and looked out for our interests. While respecting the animals, he went above and beyond trying to make sure we saw every different animal we could. We appreciated that he obviously respected and cared about the animals we were seeing. (Not all safari drivers do and will do anything to try to get to see something up close, even while encroaching too much on their space.) We had a minor vehicle difficulty and Sammi made sure that everything went smoothly and we didn't miss a minute of our trip or schedule. He is quite an asset to GoExplore. Sammi only drives on Kenya trips but if you go to Uganda, I highly recommend Moses who was equally great. Overall, the trip was an unforgettable trip of a lifetime. If you haven't gone on a safari before, you should trip to put this on your life plan. There is nothing like it and when you plan it, you want a safari operator that will listen to your needs, wants, and budget and tailor it to fit you. GoExplore will do that in a personal way. Our lodges that Brian picked were magical and the food was outstanding. There was nothing about our trip that we would have changed. I highly recommend GoExplore if you want to travel to any of the countries they operate in. If not those countries, then reconsider them over the more commercialized ones (such as South Africa) and you won't be disappointed."

"We just finished a 2-week tour of South Africa with extension to Victoria Falls and the Monde Village Cultural Experience was one of the highlights of the entire trip. It is a must-do for anyone in the area. Tongesai (our guide) was very personable and worked with us to customize the experience. He was flexible and took time to explain many things that aren't part of the "regular tour". We had great conversations throughout the tour. He ended up dropping us off so late (8:30pm), his wife had to call him twice. He took a few pictures with us so he had alibi. :) Mr Ncube (our village host) and his family were welcoming and excited to show us their way of life. Mr Ncube's explanations of his culture, family structure, farming struggles, and discussions on many topics showed us a simple way of life, much different than our modern American ways, but it made so much sense. People here fight hard to live but they do it with a smile. They may be poor, but not in spirit. We asked many questions and received questions ourselves. It was as if I was visiting an uncle living in a rural part of a third-world country. This family made us felt at home. We wish we had more time to sit under the summer kitchen during a raining day, sharing food and chatting with these folks. We wish we could sit in the winter kitchen to hear him teach his children and grandchildren. Needless to say, we spent 4+ hrs at this experience and wanted more. I am now back to "civilization" in a nice Qatari hotel, but I kept thinking about my time in the simple Monde Village. What a breath of fresh air that was. I brought some extra clothes to give, but ended up giving as much as I could live without for the rest of my trip. A pair of sandals doesn't mean much to me, but it means a lot to people in these villages. This is 30+ hrs flight from home so it is a one-time chance to help; I had to make the best of it. If I can come back to this area, I will definitely bring more people to share in this amazing experience. I encourage all who come to Victoria Falls to add this cultural experience to their itinerary."

"Cultural Vibes Travel and Tours has proved to be excellent yet again as this is now the third time, we have used them and a much-needed break after almost 3 years with the Covid pandemic. Tongesai is extremely reliable, professional, knowledgeable and does everything to make your trip a memorable experience. Compared to local larger companies, Tongesai’s individual package rates are more reasonable and come with a customized touch. We felt that our holiday with Tongesai was much better and suited us more so than if we had booked through a larger company. His individual tailoring, personal involvement and attention to detail pays off in the smooth running of your trip. Our visits to the Victoria Falls, both sides from Zimbabwe and Zambia were magnificent and never cease to amaze us. On this trip Tongesai arranged for a private sunset cruise on the Zambezi just for our family of four instead of on the larger vessels, which was a very pleasant alternative. The boat trip in Chobe is magical and a must if you venture into Botswana. Wildlife was in abundance, including lion, elephant, wildebeest, buffalo, puku, kudu, bushbuck, waterbuck, impala, gemsbok, steenbok, sable and roan antelope, etc. We even saw a relative of Cecil, the famous black-maned lion, ‘once a true king of Hwange National Park’. I have no hesitation in recommending the company for arranging tours in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana - we will definitely be seeing him again. He is currently setting up arrangements with colleagues in Kruger National Park to venture into South Africa and I wish him every success with that."
