Zanzibar vs Mozambique is one of East Africa's most common travel questions, and the answer depends on what you want from your African experience. Zanzibar is a historic island known for pristine beaches, Stone Town's culture, and spice markets. Mozambique offers diverse wildlife safaris, affordable accommodations, and some of the world's best marine encounters. Both destinations deliver incredible value in 2026, but they appeal to different travelers.
The decision hinges on three factors: your budget, travel style, and what you want from Africa. Many travelers combine both destinations for a complete experience. Mozambique safaris emphasize wildlife and value, while Zanzibar emphasizes culture and relaxation. This guide helps you choose or combine both wisely.
What Makes Zanzibar Special for Beach Travelers?
Zanzibar is a small island off Tanzania's coast that attracts over 300,000 tourists annually. Known for pristine white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and a rich cultural heritage, Zanzibar offers something different from a mainland safari. Stone Town, the capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage site with narrow streets, historic buildings, and vibrant markets.
Zanzibar's Top Attractions
Stone Town combines Arab, Indian, and European influences in its architecture and food. Walk through the spice markets, visit the Sultan's Palace, and relax in traditional cafes. The beaches at Nungwi and Paje offer water sports like kite surfing and snorkeling.
Zanzibar's beaches are its main draw. Nungwi Beach sits on the north coast with calm waters perfect for families. Paje Beach on the east offers stronger winds for kite surfing and a laid-back village atmosphere. South coast beaches like Kiwengwa deliver quieter, more secluded experiences.
Marine activities make Zanzibar memorable. Snorkeling tours visit coral reefs teeming with colorful fish. Dolphin watching trips depart daily. Scuba diving sites around the island suit all experience levels. Most hotels arrange these activities easily.
Zanzibar's Cost Structure in 2026
A 7-day Zanzibar trip costs $1,500–$3,500 per person, depending on accommodation choices. Budget beach hotels run $30–$60 per night. Mid-range resorts cost $80–$150 per night. Luxury properties exceed $200 per night.
Food is affordable. Street meals cost $2–$5. Local restaurants charge $5–$15 per meal. Beach resort dining costs $15–$30. Activities like snorkeling tours run $25–$50 per person. Diving certification courses cost $300–$500.
What Makes Mozambique Special for Safari & Diving?
Mozambique is a Southern African country offering both wildlife safaris and world-class diving. Unlike Zanzibar's island focus, Mozambique combines mainland safari parks with coastal marine wonders. For divers, Tofo is the answer with manta rays daily at Manta Reef, whale sharks year-round, and humpback whales from July to November. There is no single marine destination in East Africa that matches this concentration.[2]
Mozambique's Safari Experience
Mozambique Safari Parks are ranked by wildlife density and offer authentic bush experiences. Mozambique's safari parks provide excellent wildlife viewing opportunities with fewer crowds than famous parks like the Serengeti. Gorongosa National Park is the largest, protecting over 100,000 animals including elephants, lions, and buffalo.
Safari costs in Mozambique are lower than neighboring countries. A 7-day safari package runs $1,200–$2,500 per person, including accommodation, meals, and guided drives. Budget camps cost $40–$80 per night. Mid-range lodges run $100–$180 per night. Luxury safari camps exceed $250 per night.
Mozambique's Diving & Marine Life
Tofo Beach is Mozambique's diving capital, located in the south. The waters here host the largest concentration of manta rays in the world. Whale sharks appear year-round. Humpback whales migrate through from July to November, creating unforgettable encounters.
Diving certification courses cost $300–$450 in Mozambique. Guided dives run $60–$100 per person. Snorkeling trips cost $30–$50. Accommodation in Tofo ranges from $25–$80 per night for budget options to $150+ for mid-range resorts.
Both destinations offer incredible value but serve different travel styles. Zanzibar excels for beach relaxation, culture, and island vibes. Mozambique wins for budget safaris, diving, and adventure. Your choice depends on priorities and budget.

Can You Combine Zanzibar and Mozambique in One Trip?
While it's possible, it's logistically challenging due to flight routes. It's best to pair Zanzibar with East Africa safaris and Mozambique with Southern Africa circuits. Trying to combine both requires careful planning and often involves backtracking.[3]
The Best Combined Itinerary
If you want both destinations, consider this 14-day approach. Days 1–7 focus on Zanzibar beaches, Stone Town, and culture. Day 8 involves travel to mainland Tanzania. Days 9–11 cover safari parks like Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Lake Manyara. Optional: 1–2 nights returning to Zanzibar for a final beach day.
Alternatively, pair Mozambique with Southern African safaris. Combine Mozambique's Gorongosa Park with nearby Zimbabwe or South African circuits. This approach reduces flight complications and creates a natural safari progression.
Most travelers find it easier to choose one destination per trip and return for the other later. This approach maximizes relaxation and minimizes travel fatigue.
Visa Requirements and Travel Documents
Both Zanzibar and Mozambique have straightforward visa processes for most travelers in 2026. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so you need a Tanzanian visa. Mozambique requires its own visa for most nationalities. Understanding these requirements prevents travel delays.
Tanzania Visa for Zanzibar
Most visitors need a Tanzanian visa to enter Zanzibar. You can obtain an e-visa online before travel or a visa-on-arrival at the airport. E-visas cost $50 and process within 48 hours. Visa-on-arrival also costs $50 but can involve longer queues.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. Many nationalities qualify for visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry. Check Tanzania's immigration website for your specific country.
Visa-on-arrival is available at Mozambique's main airports and borders, though e-visas are faster and more reliable. Your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond your stay. Check Mozambique's immigration portal for the latest requirements for your nationality.
Health, Vaccinations, and Safety Considerations
Both destinations require similar health precautions. Malaria is present in both regions, so antimalarial medication is recommended. Yellow fever vaccination is not mandatory but advised for many travelers. Consult your doctor 4–6 weeks before travel.
Malaria prevention is essential. Antimalarial medications like doxycycline or atovaquone-proguanil reduce infection risk by 90%. Insect repellent with DEET and long sleeves at dawn and dusk add protection.
Safety in Both Destinations
Zanzibar is generally safe for tourists. Petty theft occurs in Stone Town, so avoid displaying valuables. Avoid walking alone at night. Use registered taxis or hotel transportation.
Mozambique is also reasonably safe for tourists in established travel areas. Gorongosa National Park and Tofo Beach have good security. Avoid remote border areas and travel with guides in unfamiliar regions. Both destinations benefit from tourism infrastructure that prioritizes visitor safety.
Best Time to Visit: Weather and Wildlife
Both Zanzibar and Mozambique share the same ideal travel window: June to October. This dry season offers perfect weather, excellent visibility for diving, and optimal wildlife viewing. Temperatures range from 18°C to 28°C (64°F to 82°F) at night and day respectively.
Seasonal Breakdown
June to August is peak season with the most tourists and highest prices. September and October offer fewer crowds and slightly warmer temperatures. November to May is the rainy season with lower prices but reduced visibility for diving and wildlife viewing.
For safaris, June to October aligns with the Great Migration patterns in Tanzania and dry conditions in Mozambique parks. For diving in Mozambique, July to November brings humpback whales. Manta rays appear year-round but peak in the dry season.
Getting There: Flights and Transportation
Zanzibar has excellent flight connections from major international hubs. Direct flights arrive from Europe, the Middle East, and other African countries. The main airport (ZNZ) handles most international traffic. Flight times from London average 12–15 hours with one stop.
Mozambique's main airport is in Maputo (the capital), though some tourists fly to Beira or Vilanculos for safaris and diving. International flights often require one or two stops. Flight times from Europe average 14–18 hours.
Once in-country, local flights connect Zanzibar to mainland Tanzania. In Mozambique, internal flights link Maputo to safari parks and coastal towns. Expect 1–2 hour flights costing $100–$250 per person.
Accommodation Options and Booking Tips
Both destinations offer accommodations for every budget. Zanzibar's tourism infrastructure means more options in established areas. Mozambique's lodges deliver authentic experiences with fewer chains.
Zanzibar Lodging
Budget hotels in Stone Town and beach areas cost $30–$60 per night with basic amenities. Mid-range resorts ($80–$150 per night) offer pools, restaurants, and water sports. Luxury properties ($200+ per night) provide private beaches and premium service.
Beachfront locations command premium prices. Inland Stone Town hotels offer better value. Many properties include breakfast and activities in their rates.

"Edward our driver and David our cook collected myself and my wife from our Arusha accommodation early on day one. We were the only ones on this safari. We visited three parks, Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti. Our first night was in a fixed tent with toilet and shower whereas the other three were under canvas alongside other safari tours sharing facilities. David managed magnificent meals cooked from ingredients taken with us and made on a single gas burner in the communal kitchens. We had more than enough to eat. The safari allowed us to see all big five animals close up from our extending roof six seat Landrover, often lions, giraffe and zebra were just a few feet away. Edward made sure that we saw everything possible. Ngorongoro crater was most impressive. We were at our request taken to the western gate to continue our African adventure to be put on board a bus to Mwanza where we caught the train to Dar and continued our travels to Zanzibar. An excellent trip especially with Edwards animal knowledge, good spoken English and David's cooking."

"In a nutshell: I can highly recommand this operator. At the beginning we contacted 4 different operators. Before Safari: We decided for this operator because of his very well structured offer and reasonable pricing. Mack (The big boss ;) ) answered very quick on any questions. The tour planning was just excellent and contained everything you need. - Airport Pick up and drop off (on all airports) - All Hotels included - 3 Meals per day - Drinks (no alcoholics) - Guide - Park entrance fees - everything necessary - Insurance, which was quit important for me. Also "Extras" has been no problem for Mack! (Also: GOOD JOB, man) While Safari: Our Guide, Edward, was really well acknowledged, spoke perfect and easy-to-understand english and told us a lot about the country, plants, animals, culture and everything we want to know about. On some evenings we shared dinner with him - he was a very nice companion. Somehow and at any time he was able to put us on the best position to watch the animals, even when there has been lots of other cars. We saw even more animals than expected. Tarangire- Ngorogoro crater -Serengeti is amazing and defently worth to go there (especially with Edward - GOOD JOB, man. Thank you so much!) We saw plenty of: Elephant, Lions, Hippos, Giraffe, Hyenas, Pigs (Swain ;), Zebras, Gazelle, leopards, gepards... everything (except Rhino- no Luck) But baby-making lions :D straight in front of the car... :D Housing: The first Hotel in Arusha could have been a bit more cozy - especially in comparison to other Hotels included in this tour. It´s nice from the outside, it was clean, had a nice breakfast, recommandable restaurant, friendly staff. So no reason to complain. The second spot was just amazing. We really regret that we couldn´t stay longer. Nice and wonderful furnished bungalow in the middle of a beautiful tropical garden. The Overview of the mountain side from your balcony was magnicifent. It´s like an african Toscany. Just wonderful. Dinner was tasty and the staff/Service was absolutely outstandig. We spend 2 nights in Serengeti (Actually not planed, but very welcomed :D) in a camp. The tents are luxury, the staff really friendly and welcoming. A few of them spoke even very good german. Staff also came for little small talk, which I really liked. Songs in the evening, bonfire and just a good vibes. In the dark you are allways accompanied by a staff member, when you go to your tent. (also dangerous) animals get very close to/ in the camp. We heard Hyenas and lots of other animals in the night. Background noises are just super :D One morning we head gazelle straight in front of the tent. Other morning we saw a giant pod of zebras an wildebeest like 50 to 100m passing by. I highly recommand to stay there :) End of Safari, we flew back to arusha by serengeti airstrip. This was one of the extras we asked for - on problem to organise for our operator. After Safari: Once again we have been picked up timely. Driver allready waited for us. Back again to the same hostel, we spend a nice afternoon there. Mack - the manager - came over just to ask how our trip was, if everything was allright and to take care that we are happy. Next morning we flew to zanzibar. Also this last Drop off was included, well organized and timely. in Conclusion: I highly and by heart recommand this tour operator in arusha. We had a great Trip, great experience. Thank you for everything to Mack&Edward!"

"I was very happy with the level of service Kiliholiday's offers. Mack was very flexible and helpful. He was very responsive from the very beginning. I know a lot of people may worry about paying the deposit in advance but this is crucial for Mack to prebook you lodges, or campsites. As well as organize your plane tickets as this is also possible. I flew from Zanzibar - totally efficient check-in at the airport even though the terminal is operating 100% manually. Guys were waiting for us at the airport already, even though the flight was 45 minutes ahead of schedule! We have started our adventure with Bakar - our guide and driver. We have seen the big 5! Enjoyed every moment of our 4 days Safari Game. Seen so many animals, the real beauty of Africa. Tanzania is truly beautiful! The night at Serengeti Central camp? Absolutely stunning! Need to do! I will be back for sure, back to Kiliholiday's service too. thank you Mack, thank you Bakar!"
