Lake Ihema is Rwanda's second-largest lake, yet a one-hour boat cruise can cost as little as $35 in 2027. [4]
Lake Ihema boat safari packages 2027 cost $35 per person for a shared cruise and $50 per person for a private cruise. Sunset trips cost $45 for visitors aged 13 and above, or $30 for children aged 6 to 12. The best dry-season months are December to February and June to September. [2][4]
Lake Ihema boat safari packages 2027 give travelers a simple way to add water-based wildlife viewing to a Rwanda trip. The cruise takes place inside Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda. It adds a different view of the park, with wildlife watched from a roofed boat rather than a safari vehicle.
Lake Ihema boat safari packages suit travelers who want a short activity with clear prices. The standard cruise lasts one hour. Shared trips cost $35 per person, while private cruises cost $50 per person before the extra private guide fee. [2]
Akagera National Park is known for its lakes, open plains, and wildlife viewing. A Lake Ihema cruise may give you views of elephants and buffalo near the water. [1] Birdwatching is also a common reason to choose a boat trip, but the strongest value is the change in viewing angle.
Quick answer: Lake Ihema boat safari packages cost $35 for a shared cruise and $50 for a private cruise in 2027. Boats leave Ihema Jetty at 07:30 and 15:00. A sunset cruise starts after 16:30 and costs $45 for visitors aged 13 and above. [2][4]
SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators and authentic traveler reviews. Use the package pages to check what each itinerary includes before you pay. The right choice depends on your group size, travel dates, and interest in a morning, afternoon, or sunset trip.
Lake Ihema boat safari packages are short wildlife trips on Akagera National Park's largest lake. Lake Ihema is also described as Rwanda's second-largest lake. [4] The standard experience lasts one hour and leaves from Ihema Jetty twice each day.
Lake Ihema boat safari packages work well as a stand-alone park activity or as part of a wider Akagera itinerary. A package may combine the cruise with a game drive, park entry, transport, meals, and lodging. Those extra services change the total trip price, so compare the inclusions carefully.
The standard boat cruise includes a roofed boat, life jackets, and an armed ranger guide. [2] These details matter because the boat gives shade, while the ranger helps guide wildlife viewing and supports safety on the lake.
Lake Ihema is known for boat-based wildlife viewing inside Akagera National Park. National Geographic describes a wildlife cruise that can give visitors a chance to spot elephants and buffalo. [1] These sightings are never a fixed promise, though the lake setting gives you a useful chance to see animals at the water's edge.
Lake Ihema boat safari packages are best for travelers who want a short activity, families who prefer a gentle safari outing, and couples seeking a sunset cruise. They also suit visitors with one free afternoon in Akagera. The one-hour length makes the cruise easy to add to a longer game-drive plan.
Compare Akagera safari packages for 2027 if you want to combine the boat cruise with more park activities.
Lake Ihema boat safari packages cost $35 per person for a shared boat and $50 per person for a private boat in 2027. A private cruise also has an additional guide fee. These are the clearest stand-alone cruise prices available for planning. [2]
| Experience | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Shared Lake Ihema cruise | $35 per person | Solo travelers and small groups |
| Private Lake Ihema cruise | $50 per person, plus guide fee | Couples, families, and private groups |
| Sunset boat safari, age 13 and above | $45 per person | Sunset wildlife viewing |
| Sunset boat safari, ages 6 to 12 | $30 per person | Families with children |
The sunset boat safari is available after 16:30. Visitors aged 13 and above pay $45, while children aged 6 to 12 pay $30. [4] This price structure makes the sunset trip worth checking for families, especially when children qualify for the lower rate.
A one-day Akagera package that includes a Lake Ihema boat cruise is listed at $710 for a solo traveler. The same package is listed at $279 per person for a group of six. The listed travel period runs from September 5, 2026, through April 30, 2027. [5]
This large price gap shows why group size matters. A solo package may include private transport, guide services, and other costs that groups share. Ask for a full breakdown before booking. A low cruise price does not always mean a low total safari price.
Review daily Rwanda safari costs for 2027 before adding Akagera to a longer route.
Compare Lake Ihema safari package prices and request a quote from verified operators when you know your dates and group size.
The best time for a Lake Ihema sunset safari is the dry season, especially December to February and June to September. These months are identified as the best period for the sunset experience. [4] The morning and afternoon cruise schedule runs year-round according to the listed departure times.
The 07:30 cruise is a strong choice for travelers who want to start early. It leaves from Ihema Jetty and lasts one hour. [2] This departure can fit before other daytime plans, such as a game drive or a transfer within an Akagera itinerary.
The 15:00 cruise gives you a later start without waiting for the sunset option. It is useful for travelers who arrive in the park later or want to keep the morning open. The listed standard departures are 07:30 and 15:00. [2]
The sunset boat safari starts after 16:30 and has separate child and adult prices. [4] Choose it if the light and timing matter more than the lowest price. The sunset option costs $45 for visitors aged 13 and above, and $30 for children aged 6 to 12.
Dry-season planning can help travelers build a clear schedule, but wildlife sightings still depend on conditions and animal movement. The boat cruise gives you a chance to see elephants and buffalo. It does not guarantee a sighting on every departure. [1]
| Departure | Time | Good choice for |
|---|---|---|
| Morning cruise | 07:30 | Early starters and full-day itineraries |
| Afternoon cruise | 15:00 | Late arrivals and relaxed schedules |
| Sunset cruise | After 16:30 | Couples and families seeking evening light |
To book a Lake Ihema boat safari, choose your travel date, departure time, group size, and boat type first. Then confirm whether the quote covers only the cruise or also includes park entry, transport, food, accommodation, and guide services.
A one-hour cruise works for travelers who already have transport and park access. A one-day package works better for visitors starting in Kigali who want an organized trip. A longer Rwanda route can include Akagera with other stops.
Travelers planning a wider route can also read about things to do in Kigali and their 2027 costs. This helps you decide whether to place Akagera at the start or end of your trip.
A shared boat costs $35 per person. A private boat costs $50 per person, with an extra guide fee. [2] Shared trips are the better fit for budget planning. Private trips give your group more control over the experience and the people on board.
Bring a light jacket, sun protection, drinking water, and a camera with a secure strap. The boat has a roof, but weather can still change during the trip. Follow the ranger's instructions and keep food stored safely.
Akagera visitors who want to add walking can compare the separate Akagera walking safari packages for 2027. A boat cruise and a walking activity offer very different ways to experience the park, so do not treat them as the same product.
Book early when your dates are fixed, especially for private boats and sunset departures. October 2026 is a practical time to start planning trips for 2027. Ask each operator to confirm the current rate, age rules, departure time, and cancellation terms in writing.
A Lake Ihema boat cruise is a one-hour wildlife experience on Akagera National Park's largest lake. [2][4] The ranger guide helps direct attention toward the shoreline and open water. The boat's roof gives shade, while life jackets form part of the listed cruise equipment. [2]
Wildlife viewing from water feels different from a game drive. The boat moves at a steady pace and gives you a broad view across the lake. National Geographic lists elephants and buffalo among the animals visitors may spot during the cruise. [1]
Elephants: Elephants may appear near the lake edge or in nearby wet areas. Keep your camera ready, but follow the guide's instructions if animals approach the boat.
Buffalo: Buffalo are another listed wildlife highlight for the Lake Ihema cruise. [1] Their position can change during the day, so the morning, afternoon, and sunset trips may offer different views.
Water and shore views: The boat provides a low, open view of the lake. This makes the cruise a useful change from a vehicle-based safari, even when large animals stay out of sight.
Families often choose the cruise because the standard experience lasts one hour. Couples may prefer the sunset departure after 16:30. Solo travelers may favor the $35 shared boat, while private groups may prefer the $50 boat and added guide service. [2][4]
Travelers with more time in Rwanda can compare the country's other safari and nature routes. Volcanoes National Park suits a different type of trip, while Mount Karisimbi offers a mountain focus. These places should complement Akagera rather than replace the lake cruise.
Do you want a short wildlife activity or a full park day? Answer that question before choosing a package. It keeps your budget clear and prevents you from paying for services you will not use.

"I was working with a tour operator out of Kenya to plan a Uganda gorilla trek followed by a Kenya & Tanzania safari. For some reason, the Uganda portion started having issues with only a few weeks to go. Enter Brian Ahereza of GoExplore. Wow! Talk about fast acting and excellent service. Within 1 day, Brian arranged everything. The only thing that would have made my trip better is if I had added one extra day, but by this point, we couldn't squeeze it in, so Brian did the absolute best with what he had to work with. For starters, one of the best things that could have happened did! ANd that was to have Charles assigned as our driver/guide. We flew into Kigali, Rwanda and Charles met us at the airport and took us to our hotel. The next morning we got up for the long drive to the Nkoringo area of Bwindi. A lot of this drive is on some VERY difficult dirt roads and Charles was masterful at navigating the terrain. Furthermore, I was using offline Google Maps to track our location and there is no possible way I could have gotten to where Charles was going. We got to Nkoringo Lodge and immediately loved it. Brian had arranged for us to have one of only 2 rooms there that had on demand hot water. Our room overlooked Bwindi and we sat on the deck admiring the view. To get to the bar/dining area, we hiked up and over a ridge and the view from that side was south to the 3 volcanoes on the border of Uganda/Rwanda/Congo - absolutely beautiful! The next day we did the trek to the Nkuringo gorilla group. It was not a difficult trek until we had to cross a fast flowing stream because the gorillas had gone to that side and as soon as we crossed, they came back! So we did too. And then we found them and it was such a wonderful experience! My wife was standing next to me and a young male (7-8 years old??) suddenly turned and started walking towards us. My wife moved to the left, but our guide said to stand still. The gorilla walked right between us and as he passed, he stuck out his arm between my legs and grasped me around the thigh!!! OMG! Even though I could feel his amazing power, I did not feel in danger. Just as quickly, he let go and continued walking! After that amazing trek, we drove (another long day) up to Queen Elizabeth National Park and spent 2 nights at the Buffalo Safari lodge. We did a couple of games drives in which we saw lots of antelope, elephants, buffalo and 6 lions (all female, with one or two young males). We followed with a boat ride on the Kazenga channel which was fantastic. The next day, we drove to Kibale National Park to look for Chimps. We arrived at our wonderful lodge, the Chimpanzee Forest Guest House at about lunchtime and then headed to Kibale for our Chimp Trek. At lunch, we met a couple who showed us amazing pictures from their trek that very morning. Unfortunately for us, even with 7 groups in the forest, we could only find 2 chimp sand they were up in the trees. That happens in nature, but the real lesson is to take the morning trek!!! The next day, Charles drove us to Entebbe and our Uganda trip was over. One of my friends asked me about the birds in Uganda. My wife loves birds and by extension, I have come to love them as well. SHe asked Charles, our guide, about every single bird we saw. Charles had a very well worn copy of "Birds of East Africa". He didn't need that book because he had it memorized. Charles was a fantastic driver/guide/person! He made our trip incredibly special! I can't thank Brian, Charles and GoExplore enough for making this so special!!!"
5★ - "I’m a wildlife photographer, and in May 2025, I went on an 8-day private photo safari organized by Brian, the owner of GoExplore Safari. The goal was to photograph Uganda’s wildlife highlights: gorillas in Bwindi, big ca" - Jason Chen • Verified review
"I’m a wildlife photographer, and in May 2025, I went on an 8-day private photo safari organized by Brian, the owner of GoExplore Safari. The goal was to photograph Uganda’s wildlife highlights: gorillas in Bwindi, big cats in Queen Elizabeth, chimpanzees in Kibale, and the rare Shoebill Stork in Mabamba Swamp. The itinerary was well thought out, and everything ran smoothly. I flew into Kigali, Rwanda, which I highly recommend if you're heading to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi — much closer and more convenient than Entebbe. If photography is your priority, I also suggest booking two gorilla treks or considering Mgahinga. I only did one, and while it was incredible to see them, capturing strong images was difficult. The rainforest is thick, lighting tricky, and your movement limited — just something to keep in mind. Mozes, my guide, was outstanding. He’s punctual, safe, knowledgeable, and has a clear love for wildlife. He studied tourism, understands photography, and even shared stories from past conservation work, like relocating giraffes from Murchison Falls to Kidepo. He always positioned the car for the best angles and made the drives smooth and productive. Our first stop was Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, just five minutes from Rushaga Gate. The lodge was cozy, well-designed, and mosquito-free, with great coffee and local food — an ideal base for gorilla trekking. In Queen Elizabeth, we had four full days of game drives. I like to go hard on photography, so we were out from sunrise to sunset. One major perk with GoExplore is you can plan your own drive schedule within park hours (6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). On our first day, we stayed until closing — the only car left in Kasenyi Plains. That kind of flexibility made a huge difference. I also recommend the optional lion and leopard tracking. You’re still in your private vehicle, but a tracker joins you and leads off-road directly to the cats. We spent nearly four hours with a leopard and her cubs in a cactus tree — truly a dream scenario for any photographer. Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale was another highlight. The chimps came down from the trees and moved through the forest, and we followed them. The one-hour viewing stretched to 2.5 hours. For photography, it’s better to wait until they’re on the ground — the real action happens there. On the final day, we went to Mabamba Swamp to see the Shoebill. From a photography standpoint, it’s the best place in Africa to photograph this rare bird. The canoe brings you to water level, with clean backgrounds and soft light — a perfect setup. Uganda in late May was lush, green, and surprisingly dry — just one short rainstorm. The scenery, wildlife, and people made it a beautiful place to explore. If you’re considering Uganda, book with GoExplore — and if you can, request Mozes. His experience and attention to detail made the entire trip not just productive, but truly enjoyable. Huge thanks to Brian and Mozes for making it all happen!"
