African elephants were reported locally extinct in Burundi by the 1970s, and the available research does not provide evidence of a confirmed wild population or a current national elephant census. Conservation priorities therefore centre on preventing illegal wildlife trade, protecting remaining habitats and strengthening regional cooperation.

Lake Kivu surprises many travelers: Cormoran Lodge offers lakeside cabin stays from $155 per night, while Lake Kivu Serena Hotel starts at $190. [1][4]
The best Lake Kivu lodges for 2027 range from budget-friendly hotels in Gisenyi to wooden cabins near Kibuye and five-star lakeside stays. Published rates start at $155 per night at Cormoran Lodge and $190 at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel. Use Lake Kivu as a relaxing stop on a Rwanda safari, then compare verified packages and reviews through SafariFind.
Lake Kivu lodges are lakeside hotels, cabins, cottages, and tented stays around Rwanda’s western shore. The best choice depends on your budget, preferred town, room style, and safari route. Cormoran Lodge suits travelers seeking wooden cabins near Kibuye, while Lake Kivu Serena Hotel suits guests wanting a five-star stay in Gisenyi.
Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s most useful rest stop between major wildlife and primate destinations. You can pair a lakeside stay with Rwanda safari packages, then continue toward Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe, or Akagera. The lake adds a slower pace without removing cultural and outdoor activities.
Lake Kivu’s accommodation includes wooden cabins, hotel rooms, cottages, and tented rooms. Cormoran Lodge has six wooden cabins on stilts near Kibuye, according to one source. [1] Another travel source describes the property as having seven log cabins. [7] This difference matters when booking, so ask the operator to confirm the current room count.
Lake Kivu Serena Hotel is a five-star hotel in Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu. [4] A 2027 primate safari itinerary also lists the hotel for one night in July 2027. [3] That makes it a practical option for travelers who want a polished base before or after a northern Rwanda experience.
Travelers booking early for 2027 should compare room type, location, meals, transfers, and cancellation terms. A low nightly rate may not include transport from Kigali or activities on the lake. Compare verified Rwanda safari packages with Lake Kivu stays before choosing your final lodge.
Lake Kivu lodges matter because they connect several travel goals in one route. You can rest after a long drive, enjoy a quiet shoreline, and request a custom itinerary that includes gorilla trekking or a wildlife drive. SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators, package details, and authentic traveler reviews.
Lake Kivu lodge prices in 2027 start at $155 per night among the published rates in this guide. Cormoran Lodge starts at $155, and Lake Kivu Serena Hotel starts at $190. [1][4] Other hotels and guesthouses may sit below or above those figures, but travelers should request a current quote because availability and room categories change.
| Name | Price | Duration | Rating | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cormoran Lodge | From $155 per night | One or more nights | Not provided | Wooden cabins near Kibuye |
| Lake Kivu Serena Hotel | From $190 per night | One or more nights | Five-star hotel | Lakeside luxury in Gisenyi |

| Kivu Lodge | Current rate not provided | One or more nights | Not provided | Cottages and executive suites |
Cormoran Lodge is the clearest mid-range reference in the available 2027 research. Its published starting rate is $155 per night. [1] The lodge sits near Kibuye and offers wooden cabins on stilts, which gives the stay a distinct lake setting rather than a standard city-hotel feel.
Lake Kivu Serena Hotel provides the clearest luxury reference. Its published starting rate is $190 per night, and the property is described as a five-star hotel in Gisenyi. [4] The final price may depend on room type, dates, meals, and package arrangements, so treat $190 as a starting point, not a guaranteed total.
Musanto Hotel is described as a budget-friendly hotel in Gisenyi. It has 23 en-suite guestrooms. [5] The property is located 0.3 kilometers from a soccer field and 0.6 kilometers from Gisenyi Hospital. [5] These details can help travelers who value town access and practical facilities over a private lakeside cabin.
Paradise Malahide is in Rubona, about 7 kilometers south of Gisenyi. [8] Its position may suit travelers who want lake views away from the busiest town center. The available research does not provide a 2027 room rate, so request a quote before using it for a fixed budget.
Pricing also depends on what your safari package includes. Ask whether the quote covers breakfast, dinner, boat trips, road transfers, park permits, guide services, and taxes. Request a 2027 quote from verified safari operators for your budget and compare the full trip cost, not just the room price.
SafariFind helps you compare tour operators, package inclusions, and authentic reviews. This process is useful when a lodge appears cheap but requires a costly transfer or separate activity booking. Read the full itinerary before you pay a deposit.
The right Lake Kivu lodge depends on your route and the experience you want. Choose Kibuye for stilted cabins, Gisenyi for hotel convenience and northern access, or Rubona for a quieter lakeside setting. A one-night stop works well for a tight itinerary, while two or three nights allow more time to relax and explore.
Cormoran Lodge is near Kibuye and sits on the shores of Lake Kivu. Its published rooms start at $155 per night. [1] One source lists six wooden cabins on stilts, while another lists seven log cabins. [1][7] Confirm the current number and exact cabin type when requesting a 2027 quote.
Kibuye works well for travelers who want a scenic break during a longer circuit. You can place it between Kigali and Nyungwe, depending on the route selected by your operator. Travelers who prefer small lodges and views may find Cormoran more appealing than a large hotel.
Lake Kivu Serena Hotel is in Gisenyi and stands on the shores of Lake Kivu. It is described as a five-star hotel, with published rates starting at $190 per night. [4] The property suits couples, families, and travelers who want a more familiar hotel format after flights, road travel, or trekking.
Gisenyi also gives you a useful base for northern Rwanda. You can connect a Lake Kivu stay with Kinigi gorilla trekking packages for 2027. You can also review the guide to Volcanoes National Park permit costs and package prices before setting your trip budget.
Musanto Hotel has 23 en-suite guestrooms and a budget-friendly position in Gisenyi. [5] Its location near a soccer field and Gisenyi Hospital provides clear reference points for travelers who want town access. The available research does not state a 2027 rate, so do not assume it will match another hotel’s price.
Paradise Malahide is located in Rubona, approximately 7 kilometers south of Gisenyi. [8] The property is presented as a place with views of Lake Kivu and its islands. It may suit guests who want a village setting and a slower stop away from central Gisenyi.
Kivu Lodge has 20 cottages, including two executive suites. [8] That room mix gives couples, families, and small groups more choice than a single-room property. Ask about the exact cottage location, meal plan, lake access, and transfer time before booking.
Ruzizi Tented Lodge is another option for budget luxury, but it is in Akagera National Park beside Lake Ihema, not Lake Kivu. [2] It can fit a wider Rwanda safari plan, especially when your itinerary includes wildlife viewing. Keep the two lakes separate when comparing locations and transfer times.
Start by choosing your Rwanda safari route, then select the Lake Kivu town that fits it. Confirm the 2027 lodge rate, room type, meals, transfer plan, and cancellation rules in writing. This simple order prevents travelers from choosing a beautiful lodge that adds long or costly travel to the rest of the trip.
Gorilla trekking is a major cost driver in Rwanda, so separate the permit from your lodge budget. A Lake Kivu night does not replace the permit, guide arrangements, or transport needed for Volcanoes National Park. Read more about the best safari lodges near Volcanoes National Park if your trip centers on trekking.
Families should ask about room capacity, extra beds, meal choices, and child policies. Couples may prefer a private cabin, cottage, or lakeside room. Solo travelers should compare single supplements and shared transfers because these charges can change the total price.
Travelers adding Nyungwe should review the Nyungwe National Park safari cost guide for 2027. Those adding eastern wildlife should compare Akagera National Park lodges and rates. A lodge decision makes more sense when you view the complete circuit.
Lake Kivu activities can add value to a short stay. Depending on your package, you may ask about boat outings, shoreline time, village visits, or nearby cultural stops. You can also explore Rwanda’s best beaches and Lake Kivu shore guide when planning relaxed days.
Book only after checking the full itinerary. SafariFind lets you compare packages, review operator information, and find a trip that matches your dates. A clear quote gives you a better view of the real Rwanda safari cost than a room-only rate.
Lake Kivu lodge rates published for 2027 planning start at $155 per night at Cormoran Lodge and $190 at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel. [1][4] Other properties may cost less or more. Request a current quote that confirms room type, meals, taxes, transfers, and availability.
Gorilla trekking costs must be planned separately from Lake Kivu lodging because a lodge night does not include a trekking permit. Your quote should list the permit, transport, guide arrangements, and accommodation as separate items. Use SafariFind’s Rwanda package listings to compare complete itineraries and inclusions.
Musanto Hotel is described as a budget-friendly hotel in Gisenyi and has 23 en-suite guestrooms. [5] Its 2027 rate is not provided in the available research. Ask for a direct quote, then compare the full cost with Cormoran Lodge’s published starting rate of $155.
Lake Kivu Serena Hotel is the clearest luxury choice in this guide. It is a five-star hotel in Gisenyi on Lake Kivu’s shore, with a published starting rate of $190 per night. [4] Confirm the 2027 room category, meals, taxes, and cancellation terms before booking.
Gisenyi offers Lake Kivu Serena Hotel and Musanto Hotel, while Paradise Malahide sits in Rubona about 7 kilometers south of Gisenyi. [4][5][8] Choose Gisenyi for town access, or choose Rubona for a quieter setting. Your route should guide the final choice.
Book by comparing verified safari operators, full package prices, room details, and authentic traveler reviews. SafariFind connects travelers with verified operators and Rwanda safari packages. Request quotes early, especially when your itinerary includes gorilla trekking, fixed dates, or a preferred lakeside lodge.

"I was working with a tour operator out of Kenya to plan a Uganda gorilla trek followed by a Kenya & Tanzania safari. For some reason, the Uganda portion started having issues with only a few weeks to go. Enter Brian Ahereza of GoExplore. Wow! Talk about fast acting and excellent service. Within 1 day, Brian arranged everything. The only thing that would have made my trip better is if I had added one extra day, but by this point, we couldn't squeeze it in, so Brian did the absolute best with what he had to work with. For starters, one of the best things that could have happened did! ANd that was to have Charles assigned as our driver/guide. We flew into Kigali, Rwanda and Charles met us at the airport and took us to our hotel. The next morning we got up for the long drive to the Nkoringo area of Bwindi. A lot of this drive is on some VERY difficult dirt roads and Charles was masterful at navigating the terrain. Furthermore, I was using offline Google Maps to track our location and there is no possible way I could have gotten to where Charles was going. We got to Nkoringo Lodge and immediately loved it. Brian had arranged for us to have one of only 2 rooms there that had on demand hot water. Our room overlooked Bwindi and we sat on the deck admiring the view. To get to the bar/dining area, we hiked up and over a ridge and the view from that side was south to the 3 volcanoes on the border of Uganda/Rwanda/Congo - absolutely beautiful! The next day we did the trek to the Nkuringo gorilla group. It was not a difficult trek until we had to cross a fast flowing stream because the gorillas had gone to that side and as soon as we crossed, they came back! So we did too. And then we found them and it was such a wonderful experience! My wife was standing next to me and a young male (7-8 years old??) suddenly turned and started walking towards us. My wife moved to the left, but our guide said to stand still. The gorilla walked right between us and as he passed, he stuck out his arm between my legs and grasped me around the thigh!!! OMG! Even though I could feel his amazing power, I did not feel in danger. Just as quickly, he let go and continued walking! After that amazing trek, we drove (another long day) up to Queen Elizabeth National Park and spent 2 nights at the Buffalo Safari lodge. We did a couple of games drives in which we saw lots of antelope, elephants, buffalo and 6 lions (all female, with one or two young males). We followed with a boat ride on the Kazenga channel which was fantastic. The next day, we drove to Kibale National Park to look for Chimps. We arrived at our wonderful lodge, the Chimpanzee Forest Guest House at about lunchtime and then headed to Kibale for our Chimp Trek. At lunch, we met a couple who showed us amazing pictures from their trek that very morning. Unfortunately for us, even with 7 groups in the forest, we could only find 2 chimp sand they were up in the trees. That happens in nature, but the real lesson is to take the morning trek!!! The next day, Charles drove us to Entebbe and our Uganda trip was over. One of my friends asked me about the birds in Uganda. My wife loves birds and by extension, I have come to love them as well. SHe asked Charles, our guide, about every single bird we saw. Charles had a very well worn copy of "Birds of East Africa". He didn't need that book because he had it memorized. Charles was a fantastic driver/guide/person! He made our trip incredibly special! I can't thank Brian, Charles and GoExplore enough for making this so special!!!"
