Akagera can charge USD 1,000 for one luxury night, while a shared boat trip may cost only USD 35 per person.
The Akagera safari cost in 2027 depends on park fees, vehicle hire, activities, lodging, and trip length. Plan around USD 400 to 650 per vehicle for a three to four-hour game drive, USD 35 to 45 per person for a Lake Ihema boat safari, and USD 150 or more per person per night for accommodation. Akagera Safari Cost 2027: What a First-Timer Should Budget is a question with no single answer. Your final bill changes with the number of nights, the type of vehicle, your lodge, and the activities you choose. A short visit with one drive costs far less than a private safari with luxury rooms.
Akagera National Park is in eastern Rwanda. It suits travelers who want savannah wildlife without starting with a long multi-country route. You can add the park to a wider Rwanda trip that includes Volcanoes National Park, Kigali, or a gorilla trek.
The figures in this guide are planning estimates for 2027. They help you set a realistic budget before requesting quotes. Park tariffs can depend on nationality, residence, age, and the length of your stay, so check the charge that applies to your trip before paying a deposit. [3]
Quick answer: A first-time Akagera visit can start with a USD 400 to 650 vehicle game drive, a USD 35 to 45 boat safari, and lodging from about USD 150 per person per night. A larger Rwanda itinerary costs much more, especially when it includes gorilla trekking and premium lodges. [1][4]
Akagera safari cost in 2027 is usually driven by four items: park access, safari activities, accommodation, and transport. A private morning or afternoon drive costs about USD 400 to 650 per vehicle. A boat safari costs USD 35 to 45 per person, while a guided walk costs USD 40 to 60 per person. [1]
Akagera is useful for first-time visitors because you can build the trip in layers. Start with one game drive. Add a boat safari if you want a different view of the park. Then add a night drive or walking safari if your lodge and schedule support it.
The private game drive rate covers a vehicle, not each passenger. That distinction matters. Four people sharing a USD 400 vehicle pay about USD 100 each before park fees, lodging, meals, and transfers. Six people sharing a USD 650 vehicle pay about USD 108 each.
| Activity | Typical duration | 2027 planning cost | Pricing unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning or afternoon game drive | 3 to 4 hours | USD 400 to 650 | Per vehicle |
| Lake Ihema boat safari | About 1 hour | USD 35 to 45 | Per person |
| Guided walking safari | 1.5 to 2 hours | USD 40 to 60 | Per person |
| Night game drive | About 2 hours | USD 100 to 150 | Per person |
These figures are useful for quote checks. If an operator gives you one total price, ask which activity fees are included. A low package price may cover lodging and transport but leave boat trips, night drives, or park access outside the total.
Compare verified Akagera safari packages for 2027 to see how trip length and inclusions change the final price.
Group size changes the value of a private drive. A couple may pay more per person than a family of five. A solo traveler should ask whether the operator can place them in a shared vehicle or design a smaller private trip.
Akagera also works well as part of a larger Rwanda route. For example, travelers may spend time in Kigali before heading east. Visitors who want a longer cultural trip can add the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda or Butare.
A practical Akagera safari budget should include activities, accommodation, park fees, transport, meals, and a small amount for extras. The activity price is easy to see. Lodging and park access often shape the final total more than first-time visitors expect.
Accommodation in Akagera ranges from value-oriented stays at about USD 150 per person per night to ultra-luxury lodges above USD 1,000 per person per night. [4] That gap can change a two-night safari by more than USD 1,700 per person.
Value lodging is a sensible choice when wildlife time matters more than a large room or private camp service. Premium lodging suits travelers who want the lodge itself to be a major part of the trip. Ask whether meals, transfers, and activities appear in the quoted nightly rate.
Accommodation is also where package names can mislead you. “Three days” may mean two nights. “Full board” may cover meals but not drinks, park entry, or special activities. Read the inclusion list line by line.
Park entrance pricing requires care for 2027. One listed rate gives international visitors USD 100 per adult and USD 50 per child. It also says the fee can change with nationality, residence, age, and length of stay. [3]
A separate research summary lists USD 50 per international visitor per day. These figures conflict, so do not place one fixed entrance fee into your final budget without checking the applicable tariff. Ask your operator to show the park fee, the visitor category, and the number of chargeable days.
Budget Rwanda safari packages for 2026 and 2027 are listed at USD 1,500 to 3,000 per person. Mid-range packages sit around USD 3,000 to 6,000. Luxury trips can reach USD 6,000 to 12,000 per person. [2]
| Package level | Planning range per person | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | USD 1,500 to 3,000 | Travelers focused on cost and core activities |
| Mid-range | USD 3,000 to 6,000 | Travelers wanting more comfort and private services |
| Luxury | USD 6,000 to 12,000 | Travelers choosing premium lodges and private planning |
A seven-day Rwanda safari that combines gorilla trekking, Akagera, and premium lodges is estimated at USD 8,000 to 15,000 per person. [2] That is a different budget from an Akagera-only weekend. Keep the two plans separate when comparing quotes.
Need to keep your budget below a set limit? Request quotes from verified safari operators for your Akagera budget and compare what each quote includes.
Lake Ihema boat safari packages for 2027 can help you compare this activity before you arrive. The listed boat safari lasts about one hour and costs USD 35 to 45 per person. [1]
A boat trip changes the pace of the day. It also gives you a clear test for package value. If one itinerary includes it and another does not, the totals are not like-for-like.
First-time visitors should choose the number of nights before choosing extra activities. Two nights can work for a short introduction. Three or more nights give you more room for a game drive, Lake Ihema, and a slower travel day.
This process stops a cheap headline price from hiding extra costs. It also makes it easier to compare two different operators. SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators, package details, and authentic traveler reviews, so you can check the people behind the quote.
Akagera is best for first-time safari travelers who want a clear, compact plan. It also works for families because a vehicle rate can serve several guests. Couples should pay close attention to the per-person effect of private vehicle hire.
Birdwatchers and photographers may prefer a longer stay. More time gives you space for a boat safari and more than one drive. Visitors who want a walking activity should confirm the 1.5 to 2-hour guided walk and its USD 40 to 60 price. [1]
Request a written 2027 quote. Check the travel dates, number of nights, vehicle type, guide, park fees, meals, and activities. Then ask what happens if a park tariff changes before your arrival.
Read reviews before choosing the lowest offer. A strong review record cannot guarantee your exact experience, but it can show how an operator handles guides, timing, communication, and changes. You can also compare this guide with the Akagera safari packages 2027 booking guide.
Do not add every activity simply because it is available. A morning drive and Lake Ihema may be enough for a short trip. A night drive makes more sense when you stay at a lodge that offers it, since the listed activity is for lodge guests only. [1]
Travelers with extra days can explore more of Rwanda. A visit to Rusumo Falls suits a wider eastern route. A trip to Mount Karisimbi belongs to a different mountain plan, so do not treat it as part of a basic Akagera quote.
For beach time, compare the costs of Kibogora Beach packages in 2027. For city time, the guide to Kigali activities and 2027 costs can help you separate city spending from safari spending.
An Akagera safari in 2027 can start with USD 400 to 650 for a three to four-hour vehicle game drive, plus lodging, park fees, transport, and meals. A Lake Ihema boat safari adds USD 35 to 45 per person. Your total rises with longer stays and premium accommodation. [1]
A private three to four-hour morning or afternoon game drive costs about USD 400 to 650 per vehicle. The listed vehicle can carry up to four to six guests, so the per-person cost falls when a group shares the vehicle. [1]
A Lake Ihema boat safari costs about USD 35 to 45 per person for roughly one hour. Check whether your package includes the activity, transport to the launch point, and any park access charges before comparing totals. [1]
Akagera accommodation starts at about USD 150 per person per night at value-oriented lodges. Ultra-luxury lodges can cost more than USD 1,000 per person per night. Ask whether meals, activities, and transfers appear in the nightly rate. [4]
Verify the 2027 Akagera park entrance fee before booking. One listed tariff gives USD 100 per adult and USD 50 per child for international visitors, while another planning figure gives USD 50 per international visitor per day. Rates can depend on nationality, residence, age, and stay length. [3]
Use SafariFind to compare verified tour operators, package details, prices, and authentic traveler reviews. Request a written quote that separates park fees, lodging, transport, and activities before you choose your 2027 Akagera safari.
The Akagera safari cost in 2027 is easiest to control when you price each part separately. Start with USD 400 to 650 for a private game drive, then add USD 35 to 45 per person for Lake Ihema. Plan at least USD 150 per person per night for value lodging, while premium properties can rise above USD 1,000. [1][4]
Check the park tariff before you pay. The listed international visitor rates conflict, and the final fee can depend on nationality, residence, age, and stay length. That single check can prevent an unpleasant surprise in your final invoice.
A short Akagera trip works well for first-timers who want one drive and a boat safari. A longer Rwanda route needs a much larger budget, especially when it includes gorilla trekking and premium lodges. Compare the inclusions, not only the headline price.

"I went tracking the gorillas in Rwanda and I'm glad I made a good choice to go with Universal Ventures, Their guides are friendly, punctual driver and very responsive office for any query. The experience of gorilla trekking in a once in a lifetime and I recommend this tour operator for your gorilla safari as well. Thank you."
"I was working with a tour operator out of Kenya to plan a Uganda gorilla trek followed by a Kenya & Tanzania safari. For some reason, the Uganda portion started having issues with only a few weeks to go. Enter Brian Ahereza of GoExplore. Wow! Talk about fast acting and excellent service. Within 1 day, Brian arranged everything. The only thing that would have made my trip better is if I had added one extra day, but by this point, we couldn't squeeze it in, so Brian did the absolute best with what he had to work with. For starters, one of the best things that could have happened did! ANd that was to have Charles assigned as our driver/guide. We flew into Kigali, Rwanda and Charles met us at the airport and took us to our hotel. The next morning we got up for the long drive to the Nkoringo area of Bwindi. A lot of this drive is on some VERY difficult dirt roads and Charles was masterful at navigating the terrain. Furthermore, I was using offline Google Maps to track our location and there is no possible way I could have gotten to where Charles was going. We got to Nkoringo Lodge and immediately loved it. Brian had arranged for us to have one of only 2 rooms there that had on demand hot water. Our room overlooked Bwindi and we sat on the deck admiring the view. To get to the bar/dining area, we hiked up and over a ridge and the view from that side was south to the 3 volcanoes on the border of Uganda/Rwanda/Congo - absolutely beautiful! The next day we did the trek to the Nkuringo gorilla group. It was not a difficult trek until we had to cross a fast flowing stream because the gorillas had gone to that side and as soon as we crossed, they came back! So we did too. And then we found them and it was such a wonderful experience! My wife was standing next to me and a young male (7-8 years old??) suddenly turned and started walking towards us. My wife moved to the left, but our guide said to stand still. The gorilla walked right between us and as he passed, he stuck out his arm between my legs and grasped me around the thigh!!! OMG! Even though I could feel his amazing power, I did not feel in danger. Just as quickly, he let go and continued walking! After that amazing trek, we drove (another long day) up to Queen Elizabeth National Park and spent 2 nights at the Buffalo Safari lodge. We did a couple of games drives in which we saw lots of antelope, elephants, buffalo and 6 lions (all female, with one or two young males). We followed with a boat ride on the Kazenga channel which was fantastic. The next day, we drove to Kibale National Park to look for Chimps. We arrived at our wonderful lodge, the Chimpanzee Forest Guest House at about lunchtime and then headed to Kibale for our Chimp Trek. At lunch, we met a couple who showed us amazing pictures from their trek that very morning. Unfortunately for us, even with 7 groups in the forest, we could only find 2 chimp sand they were up in the trees. That happens in nature, but the real lesson is to take the morning trek!!! The next day, Charles drove us to Entebbe and our Uganda trip was over. One of my friends asked me about the birds in Uganda. My wife loves birds and by extension, I have come to love them as well. SHe asked Charles, our guide, about every single bird we saw. Charles had a very well worn copy of "Birds of East Africa". He didn't need that book because he had it memorized. Charles was a fantastic driver/guide/person! He made our trip incredibly special! I can't thank Brian, Charles and GoExplore enough for making this so special!!!"
"I’m a wildlife photographer, and in May 2025, I went on an 8-day private photo safari organized by Brian, the owner of GoExplore Safari. The goal was to photograph Uganda’s wildlife highlights: gorillas in Bwindi, big cats in Queen Elizabeth, chimpanzees in Kibale, and the rare Shoebill Stork in Mabamba Swamp. The itinerary was well thought out, and everything ran smoothly. I flew into Kigali, Rwanda, which I highly recommend if you're heading to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi — much closer and more convenient than Entebbe. If photography is your priority, I also suggest booking two gorilla treks or considering Mgahinga. I only did one, and while it was incredible to see them, capturing strong images was difficult. The rainforest is thick, lighting tricky, and your movement limited — just something to keep in mind. Mozes, my guide, was outstanding. He’s punctual, safe, knowledgeable, and has a clear love for wildlife. He studied tourism, understands photography, and even shared stories from past conservation work, like relocating giraffes from Murchison Falls to Kidepo. He always positioned the car for the best angles and made the drives smooth and productive. Our first stop was Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, just five minutes from Rushaga Gate. The lodge was cozy, well-designed, and mosquito-free, with great coffee and local food — an ideal base for gorilla trekking. In Queen Elizabeth, we had four full days of game drives. I like to go hard on photography, so we were out from sunrise to sunset. One major perk with GoExplore is you can plan your own drive schedule within park hours (6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). On our first day, we stayed until closing — the only car left in Kasenyi Plains. That kind of flexibility made a huge difference. I also recommend the optional lion and leopard tracking. You’re still in your private vehicle, but a tracker joins you and leads off-road directly to the cats. We spent nearly four hours with a leopard and her cubs in a cactus tree — truly a dream scenario for any photographer. Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale was another highlight. The chimps came down from the trees and moved through the forest, and we followed them. The one-hour viewing stretched to 2.5 hours. For photography, it’s better to wait until they’re on the ground — the real action happens there. On the final day, we went to Mabamba Swamp to see the Shoebill. From a photography standpoint, it’s the best place in Africa to photograph this rare bird. The canoe brings you to water level, with clean backgrounds and soft light — a perfect setup. Uganda in late May was lush, green, and surprisingly dry — just one short rainstorm. The scenery, wildlife, and people made it a beautiful place to explore. If you’re considering Uganda, book with GoExplore — and if you can, request Mozes. His experience and attention to detail made the entire trip not just productive, but truly enjoyable. Huge thanks to Brian and Mozes for making it all happen!"
"Lovely destination Uganda we selected GoExplore Safaris because their budget was affordable and they were so fast and quick at responding to our emails and all the questions. Elephants, giraffe, deer, antelope, warthogs, hippopotamus, crocodiles, hyena, lion, beautiful birds, and a leopard. It was incredible! The boat rides up the Nile to Murchison Falls is a must do and a perfect way to end the tour. I Did not have any Idea on how beautiful Uganda is. wow, I highly recommend GoExplore Safaris and travel for anyone who is interested in adventuring Uganda and Rwanda to its fullest."
"Our Rwanda trip trip from gorilla trekking in volcanoes just got done and now settled back home we were lucky to have attended the gorilla ceremony and the team was able to atleast show us why this was a big day for Rwanda it was such a coincidence to have travelled this beautiful country while they were naming the gorillas great thing to do I advise you to look for goexplore brian will take you to Kigali for this event."
