Akagera National Park can be reached from Kigali in about 2.5 hours, yet a two-night stay gives you far more time than a rushed day trip. [8]
Akagera National Park Tours 2027: Prices by Trip Length range from a listed $1,800 per person for a 2027 package described as five nights, to $4,200-$7,800 per person for a six-day safari. Two nights is the practical minimum for game drives and a Lake Ihema boat safari. Compare verified Rwanda safari packages on SafariFind before booking.
Akagera National Park Tours 2027: Prices by Trip Length are easiest to understand when you separate package cost from park entry fees. A short tour may suit travelers with limited time. A two- or three-night visit gives you a better chance to enjoy both land and water activities.
Akagera is Rwanda’s eastern savannah park. The park sits close enough to Kigali for a road transfer, but the journey still takes about 2.5 hours. [8] That makes Akagera useful for a short Rwanda trip, especially when you want a safari without adding a flight.
Known for: Akagera is known for Big Five safari experiences, game drives, and boat trips on Lake Ihema. [4][6] The park also welcomes day visitors from 06:00 to 18:00. [8] Those hours make a day visit possible, but the short format leaves less room for different safari activities.
Quick answer: A two-night Akagera safari is the best starting point for most visitors. It allows one full day of game driving and a Lake Ihema boat safari. Three nights adds more room for a night drive, northern-sector exploration, and weather changes. [6] A listed 2027 package starts at $1,800 per person. [2]
Prices need careful reading. One operator lists $1,800 per person for a 2027 option described as five nights, while another lists a six-day Akagera safari at $4,200-$7,800 per person. [2][4] These are useful planning figures, not a single fixed park rate.
Akagera National Park tour prices usually combine transport, guiding, accommodation, activities, and park access. The exact package total depends on trip length and the services selected. Therefore, compare the full itinerary rather than judging a tour by its headline price alone.
| Trip length | Published price information | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Day visit | Park access is available from 06:00 to 18:00 | Travelers with one open day from Kigali |
| Two nights | Practical minimum for a game drive and Lake Ihema boat safari | First-time visitors with limited time |
| Three nights | Allows a night drive, northern-sector exploration, and weather flexibility | Travelers wanting a fuller park visit |
| Five nights | Listed 2027 package from $1,800 per person | Travelers seeking a longer package at a published starting price |
| Six days | $4,200-$7,800 per person | Private Big Five and boat safari planning |
The table shows why trip length alone does not explain every price. The $1,800 listing describes five nights, while the six-day listing reaches $7,800 per person. [2][4] Accommodation level, private transport, guide service, and included activities can change the final total.
International adult visitors pay $100 for one day or night, $150 for two nights, and $200 for three nights. [3] International children aged 6 to 12 pay $50, $75, and $100 for those same stay lengths. [3]
| Visitor category | One day or night | Two nights | Three nights |
|---|---|---|---|
| International adult | $100 | $150 | $200 |
| International child aged 6-12 | $50 | $75 | $100 |
| Pan-African visitor outside the East African Community | $50 | $75 | $100 |
Walking safari fees have a separate published range. Premium Africa Safaris lists $50 for a one-night stay, $75 for two nights, and $100 for three nights for East African residents and African nationals. Children pay $25-$30 for a one-day or one-night stay. [5]

Choose two nights for the best balance of time and cost. Choose three nights if you want more activities and a slower pace. A day trip works for a tight schedule, but it gives you less time for changing weather, long drives, and more than one park experience.
Akagera day visits run between 06:00 and 18:00. [8] This format can work when you stay in Kigali and have one free day. The 2.5-hour drive each way, however, takes a large part of the day. [8]
Best for: travelers with a short Rwanda itinerary, private transfers, and a clear interest in a single game drive. A day trip is simple, but it leaves little room for a boat safari and a second wildlife route.
Two nights is the practical minimum for a worthwhile Akagera visit. This length allows one full day of game driving and a Lake Ihema boat safari, while arrival and departure use the remaining travel time. [6]
Lake Ihema matters because it gives your safari a different view of the park. A boat activity changes the pace after a long drive and adds a second way to experience Akagera. Travelers who want a short visit without rushing should start with two nights.
Best for: first-time visitors, couples, families, and travelers combining Akagera with Volcanoes National Park. You can also add time in Rwanda’s capital through a Kigali activities plan for 2027.
Three nights is ideal for adding a night game drive, exploring the northern sector, and keeping spare time for weather or slower wildlife days. [6] That extra night can make the safari feel less like a transfer between activities.
Best for: wildlife-focused travelers, photographers, and visitors who dislike tight schedules. Three nights also gives your guide more time to adjust the route during the safari. You are paying for more time in the park, but you gain room to respond to real conditions.
Longer Akagera tours suit travelers who want a deeper park stay or a wider Rwanda itinerary. Enjoresafaris lists a 2027 price from $1,800 per person for an option described as five nights. [2] Africa Natural Tours Company lists a six-day Big Five and boat safari at $4,200-$7,800 per person. [4]
The price gap is large. Ask what each package includes before comparing them. Check room type, private or shared vehicle use, guide service, activities, meals, and transfers. A lower starting price may reflect fewer inclusions than a private six-day safari.
For a wider plan, review this 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary with daily costs. It can help you place Akagera beside other Rwanda stops, rather than treating the park as a stand-alone booking.
Start by fixing your trip length, then compare park fees, activities, transport, and accommodation. Request a written itinerary for every quote. This simple step makes it easier to see whether a five-night package and a six-day private safari offer the same service level.
Begin with your Rwanda arrival and departure points. Kigali is the main reference point for the road journey, and Akagera sits about 2.5 hours away. [8] A day visitor needs a long travel day. Two nights gives a much better balance.
If Akagera is one part of a larger trip, compare it with a stay in Rwanda and other park areas. Travelers who want primates may also review Akagera walking safari package ideas, but walking fees and vehicle safari costs are separate items.
Do not assume every package includes every activity. Ask whether the boat safari, night drive, walking activity, park entry, and transfers appear in the price. This protects your budget and prevents surprises after arrival.
International adults pay $100 for one day or night, $150 for two nights, and $200 for three nights. [3] Children aged 6 to 12 pay half those listed adult amounts. [3] Pan-African visitors outside the East African Community pay $50, $75, and $100 for one, two, and three nights. [3]
Walking safari fees follow a different listed schedule for East African residents and African nationals. Premium Africa Safaris lists $50 for one night, $75 for two nights, and $100 for three nights. [5] Put the correct visitor category in your quote request.
SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators and authentic traveler reviews. Use the marketplace to compare itineraries, then ask operators to confirm the 2027 price, trip length, and included activities in writing.
Inside your quote request, include travel dates, group size, nationality category, preferred room type, and interest in a boat or night safari. Clear details help operators build useful quotes. They also give you a fair basis for comparing different offers.
For a package-led search, compare Akagera safari packages for first-time visitors. Read the itinerary line by line. The cheapest total is not always the best value if it removes the activity you came to experience.
Published figures include $1,800 per person for a 2027 package described as five nights, and $4,200-$7,800 per person for a six-day safari. [2][4] Park entry fees are separate planning items unless your operator clearly includes them.

Yes. Akagera is about a 2.5-hour drive from Kigali, and day visitors can enter from 06:00 to 18:00. [8] A day trip is possible, but two nights gives you more time for game drives and a boat safari.
Africa Natural Tours Company lists a six-day private Akagera Big Five and boat safari at $4,200-$7,800 per person. [4] Confirm the exact inclusions, such as accommodation, transfers, park fees, meals, guide service, and activities, before paying.

"I went tracking the gorillas in Rwanda and I'm glad I made a good choice to go with Universal Ventures, Their guides are friendly, punctual driver and very responsive office for any query. The experience of gorilla trekking in a once in a lifetime and I recommend this tour operator for your gorilla safari as well. Thank you."
"I was working with a tour operator out of Kenya to plan a Uganda gorilla trek followed by a Kenya & Tanzania safari. For some reason, the Uganda portion started having issues with only a few weeks to go. Enter Brian Ahereza of GoExplore. Wow! Talk about fast acting and excellent service. Within 1 day, Brian arranged everything. The only thing that would have made my trip better is if I had added one extra day, but by this point, we couldn't squeeze it in, so Brian did the absolute best with what he had to work with. For starters, one of the best things that could have happened did! ANd that was to have Charles assigned as our driver/guide. We flew into Kigali, Rwanda and Charles met us at the airport and took us to our hotel. The next morning we got up for the long drive to the Nkoringo area of Bwindi. A lot of this drive is on some VERY difficult dirt roads and Charles was masterful at navigating the terrain. Furthermore, I was using offline Google Maps to track our location and there is no possible way I could have gotten to where Charles was going. We got to Nkoringo Lodge and immediately loved it. Brian had arranged for us to have one of only 2 rooms there that had on demand hot water. Our room overlooked Bwindi and we sat on the deck admiring the view. To get to the bar/dining area, we hiked up and over a ridge and the view from that side was south to the 3 volcanoes on the border of Uganda/Rwanda/Congo - absolutely beautiful! The next day we did the trek to the Nkuringo gorilla group. It was not a difficult trek until we had to cross a fast flowing stream because the gorillas had gone to that side and as soon as we crossed, they came back! So we did too. And then we found them and it was such a wonderful experience! My wife was standing next to me and a young male (7-8 years old??) suddenly turned and started walking towards us. My wife moved to the left, but our guide said to stand still. The gorilla walked right between us and as he passed, he stuck out his arm between my legs and grasped me around the thigh!!! OMG! Even though I could feel his amazing power, I did not feel in danger. Just as quickly, he let go and continued walking! After that amazing trek, we drove (another long day) up to Queen Elizabeth National Park and spent 2 nights at the Buffalo Safari lodge. We did a couple of games drives in which we saw lots of antelope, elephants, buffalo and 6 lions (all female, with one or two young males). We followed with a boat ride on the Kazenga channel which was fantastic. The next day, we drove to Kibale National Park to look for Chimps. We arrived at our wonderful lodge, the Chimpanzee Forest Guest House at about lunchtime and then headed to Kibale for our Chimp Trek. At lunch, we met a couple who showed us amazing pictures from their trek that very morning. Unfortunately for us, even with 7 groups in the forest, we could only find 2 chimp sand they were up in the trees. That happens in nature, but the real lesson is to take the morning trek!!! The next day, Charles drove us to Entebbe and our Uganda trip was over. One of my friends asked me about the birds in Uganda. My wife loves birds and by extension, I have come to love them as well. SHe asked Charles, our guide, about every single bird we saw. Charles had a very well worn copy of "Birds of East Africa". He didn't need that book because he had it memorized. Charles was a fantastic driver/guide/person! He made our trip incredibly special! I can't thank Brian, Charles and GoExplore enough for making this so special!!!"
"I’m a wildlife photographer, and in May 2025, I went on an 8-day private photo safari organized by Brian, the owner of GoExplore Safari. The goal was to photograph Uganda’s wildlife highlights: gorillas in Bwindi, big cats in Queen Elizabeth, chimpanzees in Kibale, and the rare Shoebill Stork in Mabamba Swamp. The itinerary was well thought out, and everything ran smoothly. I flew into Kigali, Rwanda, which I highly recommend if you're heading to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi — much closer and more convenient than Entebbe. If photography is your priority, I also suggest booking two gorilla treks or considering Mgahinga. I only did one, and while it was incredible to see them, capturing strong images was difficult. The rainforest is thick, lighting tricky, and your movement limited — just something to keep in mind. Mozes, my guide, was outstanding. He’s punctual, safe, knowledgeable, and has a clear love for wildlife. He studied tourism, understands photography, and even shared stories from past conservation work, like relocating giraffes from Murchison Falls to Kidepo. He always positioned the car for the best angles and made the drives smooth and productive. Our first stop was Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, just five minutes from Rushaga Gate. The lodge was cozy, well-designed, and mosquito-free, with great coffee and local food — an ideal base for gorilla trekking. In Queen Elizabeth, we had four full days of game drives. I like to go hard on photography, so we were out from sunrise to sunset. One major perk with GoExplore is you can plan your own drive schedule within park hours (6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). On our first day, we stayed until closing — the only car left in Kasenyi Plains. That kind of flexibility made a huge difference. I also recommend the optional lion and leopard tracking. You’re still in your private vehicle, but a tracker joins you and leads off-road directly to the cats. We spent nearly four hours with a leopard and her cubs in a cactus tree — truly a dream scenario for any photographer. Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale was another highlight. The chimps came down from the trees and moved through the forest, and we followed them. The one-hour viewing stretched to 2.5 hours. For photography, it’s better to wait until they’re on the ground — the real action happens there. On the final day, we went to Mabamba Swamp to see the Shoebill. From a photography standpoint, it’s the best place in Africa to photograph this rare bird. The canoe brings you to water level, with clean backgrounds and soft light — a perfect setup. Uganda in late May was lush, green, and surprisingly dry — just one short rainstorm. The scenery, wildlife, and people made it a beautiful place to explore. If you’re considering Uganda, book with GoExplore — and if you can, request Mozes. His experience and attention to detail made the entire trip not just productive, but truly enjoyable. Huge thanks to Brian and Mozes for making it all happen!"
"Lovely destination Uganda we selected GoExplore Safaris because their budget was affordable and they were so fast and quick at responding to our emails and all the questions. Elephants, giraffe, deer, antelope, warthogs, hippopotamus, crocodiles, hyena, lion, beautiful birds, and a leopard. It was incredible! The boat rides up the Nile to Murchison Falls is a must do and a perfect way to end the tour. I Did not have any Idea on how beautiful Uganda is. wow, I highly recommend GoExplore Safaris and travel for anyone who is interested in adventuring Uganda and Rwanda to its fullest."
"Our Rwanda trip trip from gorilla trekking in volcanoes just got done and now settled back home we were lucky to have attended the gorilla ceremony and the team was able to atleast show us why this was a big day for Rwanda it was such a coincidence to have travelled this beautiful country while they were naming the gorillas great thing to do I advise you to look for goexplore brian will take you to Kigali for this event."
