Lake Kivu holiday packages in 2027 combine lakeside stays, boat trips, cultural visits, and optional gorilla trekking in Rwanda. Prices range from budget guesthouse breaks to luxury trips costing US$6,500 per couple or £3,719 per person for a four-night package with flights and trekking. June to September and December to January are strong travel periods.
Lake Kivu holiday packages can include a five-star lake retreat, a boat cruise, or a longer Rwanda safari with gorilla trekking. That range makes planning exciting, but it also makes prices hard to compare. A short lakeside break is very different from a private itinerary with permits and luxury lodges.
Lake Kivu sits in western Rwanda, close to the Virunga volcanoes and the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Visitors come for calm water, green hills, island trips, village visits, and easy links to Volcanoes National Park.
In this guide, you will find real 2027 price examples, the best things to see, and simple ways to choose a package. You will also see where gorilla permits affect the final cost. That detail matters because one permit alone is listed at US$1,500 per person in a luxury itinerary. [5]
Lake Kivu holiday packages in 2027 are trips built around Rwanda’s large freshwater lake. They can focus on rest, or they can add gorilla trekking, city tours, forest walks, and volcano travel. The right choice depends on your budget, trip length, and appetite for busy days.
Known for: Lake Kivu is known for shore stays, boat excursions, community visits, and views across the water. Budget travel listings present these activities as an affordable alternative to adding another expensive wildlife permit or national park. [4]
A basic package may cover a lakeside room, breakfast, transfers, and a boat ride. A larger itinerary may add Kigali, Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest, private guides, and gorilla trekking. The more activities you add, the more transport time and permit costs shape the final bill.
Africa Natural Tours lists a six-day private trip that combines gorilla trekking in the Virunga volcanoes with a Lake Kivu luxury stay. The package includes private boat cruises and kayaking. [1] This format suits travelers who want active days but still want time beside the lake.
WOW! Travel Club lists a Rwanda itinerary for March 7 to 15, 2027. The route includes Lake Kivu, Volcanoes National Park, Kigali cultural sites, and a Nyungwe Forest canopy walk. [3] It gives travelers a wider view of Rwanda rather than a lake-only holiday.
Lake Kivu adds a slower part to a Rwanda journey. Gorilla trekking can start early and demand a long walk. A lakeside stay gives you room for a boat trip, a swim, or a quiet afternoon. That contrast makes the lake a smart add-on after an active mountain visit.
Lake Kivu also works well for travelers who do not want to add another national park. A budget-safari listing points to walks, community encounters, and scenic excursions as lower-cost choices. [4] You still get local experiences without paying for another major wildlife permit.
Compare 2027 Rwanda day trips and lake packages before you choose your route.
Lake Kivu holiday packages cost from budget guesthouse rates to more than US$6,500 per couple when the trip includes luxury lodges, transfers, activities, and gorilla permits. A four-night package with flights and gorilla trekking starts at £3,719 per person in the published Travelbag listing. [2]
Price range: The clearest published examples show £3,719 per person for four nights, US$6,500 per couple for seven nights, and US$2,000 to US$3,000 per person per night sharing for a high-end Safari Tier 2 listing. [2][5][7]
| Package example | Published price | Length | Main inclusions | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Travelbag Lake Kivu holiday | From £3,719 per person | 4 nights | Flights, bed and breakfast or half-board accommodation, and gorilla trekking [2] | ||||
| Beyond Africa Rwanda package | From US$6,500 per couple | 7 nights | Kigali hotel, Volcanoes National Park lodge, two Lake Kivu shore nights, transfers, activities, and a gorilla permit [5] | Safari Tier 2 accommodation and safari listing | US$2,000 to US$3,000 per person per night sharing | Nightly rate | Deluxe rooming and safari activities, with some experiences reaching about US$3,500 or more [7] |
Gorilla permits are the biggest clear cost in the luxury example. Beyond Africa lists a US$1,500 permit per person. [5] Flights, private transfers, lodge class, guide services, and the number of nights also raise the total.
Safari Tier 2 rates need careful reading. The listing gives a high nightly range and says gorilla, chimpanzee, and golden-monkey permits are excluded. [7] A low headline price may therefore leave major costs outside the package.
LUX* Lake Kivu is listed as a five-star property with a spa, swimming pool, fitness center, and lake views. The listing has updated 2027 prices, but the supplied details do not show an amount. [8] Treat it as a luxury accommodation choice, not a fixed price promise.
Travelbag’s £3,719 price includes flights and selected November 2026 travel. [2] Use it as a benchmark for package planning, then ask what changes for your 2027 dates. Flight prices and room availability can change before you book.

Lake Kivu visitors can see calm shorelines, small islands, hill country, local communities, and nearby mountain parks. The lake is best for travelers who want a mix of rest and light activity. You can build a quiet break, or use it as one stop in a longer Rwanda safari.
Private boat cruises and kayaking are included in the six-day Africa Natural Tours luxury escape. [1] A boat trip gives you a different view of the shore and lets you spend time outside the vehicle. Ask whether fuel, guide services, safety equipment, and transfers are included in your quote.
Rubavu Beach is a useful option for travelers staying near Rubavu. The shore gives you a simple place to relax after a long drive. Kibuye, also called Karongi, suits visitors who want a quieter lake base and access to shore lodges.
Volcanoes National Park is a natural pairing with Lake Kivu. A package can place mountain trekking before a lakeside rest. The Africa Natural Tours itinerary links gorilla trekking in the Virunga volcanoes with a luxury lake stay. [1]
Gorilla trekking needs more planning than a boat ride. Permits affect both cost and schedule. Beyond Africa lists a US$1,500 permit per person in its seven-night package. [5] Travelers who want a lower-cost holiday can choose Lake Kivu walks and cultural visits instead.
Mount Karisimbi and the volcano region suit travelers who want a more active mountain day. Kigali works well at the start or end of the trip. The WOW! Travel Club itinerary includes Kigali cultural sites, Lake Kivu, Volcanoes National Park, and a Nyungwe canopy walk from March 7 to 15, 2027. [3]
Nyungwe Forest adds a different forest setting to a lake holiday. You can also plan a longer route through southern Rwanda, including Butare and the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda. These stops work best when your trip has enough days for road travel.
Find a 2027 lakeside break with Kibogora and Lake Kivu options.
Plan a Lake Kivu holiday by choosing your trip style first, then checking permits, nights, transport, and lodge level. Start with the experience you care about most. A couple seeking rest needs a different plan from a traveler combining gorillas, volcanoes, and forest walks.
Ask for a written list of inclusions before you pay a deposit. Check flights, meals, transfers, park entry, permits, activities, and accommodation nights. Travelbag includes flights, bed and breakfast or half-board accommodation, and gorilla trekking in its four-night listing. [2]
Beyond Africa includes a Kigali hotel, a Volcanoes National Park lodge, two Lake Kivu shore nights, transfers, activities, and a gorilla permit in its seven-night package. [5] Comparing inclusions this way is more useful than comparing headline prices alone.
Best time to visit: The featured Beyond Africa package recommends June to September and December to January. [5] These periods can suit travelers who want to follow the published itinerary guidance. March is also a real 2027 departure period for the WOW! Travel Club route. [3]
Book early if you need a specific lodge, flight date, or gorilla trek. Lake Kivu itself can be the flexible part of the trip. Gorilla permits and fixed group departures usually need more careful planning.

Look for clear answers about transfers, meals, boat safety, and permit fees. A good operator should explain the schedule in plain language. You should know how many nights you spend beside Lake Kivu before you book.
Lake Kivu holiday packages cost from £3,719 per person for a four-night Travelbag package with flights and gorilla trekking. A seven-night luxury itinerary starts at US$6,500 per couple. High-end Safari Tier 2 rates average US$2,000 to US$3,000 per person per night sharing. [2][5][7]
The featured luxury itinerary recommends June to September and December to January. A separate group itinerary runs from March 7 to 15, 2027. Choose dates based on your full Rwanda route, not Lake Kivu alone. [3][5]
Lake Kivu activities include private boat cruises, kayaking, lakeside relaxation, walks, community visits, and scenic excursions. These activities work well for travelers who want a break from mountain trekking or who do not want another wildlife permit. [1][4]
Yes, Lake Kivu combines well with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Africa Natural Tours lists a six-day private package with gorilla trekking, a luxury lake stay, private boat cruises, and kayaking. [1]
Two nights is a useful choice inside a longer Rwanda itinerary. The Beyond Africa package uses two Lake Kivu shore nights within seven nights. A lake-only holiday can use four nights, matching the Travelbag example. [2][5]

Lake Kivu holiday packages in 2027 suit travelers who want Rwanda’s scenery with a slower pace between active days. The published examples range from £3,719 per person for four nights with flights and gorilla trekking to US$6,500 per couple for seven nights with luxury accommodation and activities. [2][5]
Choose two lake nights if you are building a wider Rwanda circuit. Pick four nights if the lake is your main reason for traveling. June to September and December to January match the recommended seasons in the featured luxury itinerary. [5]
Do not compare price alone. Check permits, flights, meals, transfers, and activity fees. Gorilla trekking can add US$1,500 per person before other trip costs. [5] For a gentler budget, focus on boat trips, walks, and community visits.

"I went tracking the gorillas in Rwanda and I'm glad I made a good choice to go with Universal Ventures, Their guides are friendly, punctual driver and very responsive office for any query. The experience of gorilla trekking in a once in a lifetime and I recommend this tour operator for your gorilla safari as well. Thank you."
"I was working with a tour operator out of Kenya to plan a Uganda gorilla trek followed by a Kenya & Tanzania safari. For some reason, the Uganda portion started having issues with only a few weeks to go. Enter Brian Ahereza of GoExplore. Wow! Talk about fast acting and excellent service. Within 1 day, Brian arranged everything. The only thing that would have made my trip better is if I had added one extra day, but by this point, we couldn't squeeze it in, so Brian did the absolute best with what he had to work with. For starters, one of the best things that could have happened did! ANd that was to have Charles assigned as our driver/guide. We flew into Kigali, Rwanda and Charles met us at the airport and took us to our hotel. The next morning we got up for the long drive to the Nkoringo area of Bwindi. A lot of this drive is on some VERY difficult dirt roads and Charles was masterful at navigating the terrain. Furthermore, I was using offline Google Maps to track our location and there is no possible way I could have gotten to where Charles was going. We got to Nkoringo Lodge and immediately loved it. Brian had arranged for us to have one of only 2 rooms there that had on demand hot water. Our room overlooked Bwindi and we sat on the deck admiring the view. To get to the bar/dining area, we hiked up and over a ridge and the view from that side was south to the 3 volcanoes on the border of Uganda/Rwanda/Congo - absolutely beautiful! The next day we did the trek to the Nkuringo gorilla group. It was not a difficult trek until we had to cross a fast flowing stream because the gorillas had gone to that side and as soon as we crossed, they came back! So we did too. And then we found them and it was such a wonderful experience! My wife was standing next to me and a young male (7-8 years old??) suddenly turned and started walking towards us. My wife moved to the left, but our guide said to stand still. The gorilla walked right between us and as he passed, he stuck out his arm between my legs and grasped me around the thigh!!! OMG! Even though I could feel his amazing power, I did not feel in danger. Just as quickly, he let go and continued walking! After that amazing trek, we drove (another long day) up to Queen Elizabeth National Park and spent 2 nights at the Buffalo Safari lodge. We did a couple of games drives in which we saw lots of antelope, elephants, buffalo and 6 lions (all female, with one or two young males). We followed with a boat ride on the Kazenga channel which was fantastic. The next day, we drove to Kibale National Park to look for Chimps. We arrived at our wonderful lodge, the Chimpanzee Forest Guest House at about lunchtime and then headed to Kibale for our Chimp Trek. At lunch, we met a couple who showed us amazing pictures from their trek that very morning. Unfortunately for us, even with 7 groups in the forest, we could only find 2 chimp sand they were up in the trees. That happens in nature, but the real lesson is to take the morning trek!!! The next day, Charles drove us to Entebbe and our Uganda trip was over. One of my friends asked me about the birds in Uganda. My wife loves birds and by extension, I have come to love them as well. SHe asked Charles, our guide, about every single bird we saw. Charles had a very well worn copy of "Birds of East Africa". He didn't need that book because he had it memorized. Charles was a fantastic driver/guide/person! He made our trip incredibly special! I can't thank Brian, Charles and GoExplore enough for making this so special!!!"
"I’m a wildlife photographer, and in May 2025, I went on an 8-day private photo safari organized by Brian, the owner of GoExplore Safari. The goal was to photograph Uganda’s wildlife highlights: gorillas in Bwindi, big cats in Queen Elizabeth, chimpanzees in Kibale, and the rare Shoebill Stork in Mabamba Swamp. The itinerary was well thought out, and everything ran smoothly. I flew into Kigali, Rwanda, which I highly recommend if you're heading to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi — much closer and more convenient than Entebbe. If photography is your priority, I also suggest booking two gorilla treks or considering Mgahinga. I only did one, and while it was incredible to see them, capturing strong images was difficult. The rainforest is thick, lighting tricky, and your movement limited — just something to keep in mind. Mozes, my guide, was outstanding. He’s punctual, safe, knowledgeable, and has a clear love for wildlife. He studied tourism, understands photography, and even shared stories from past conservation work, like relocating giraffes from Murchison Falls to Kidepo. He always positioned the car for the best angles and made the drives smooth and productive. Our first stop was Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, just five minutes from Rushaga Gate. The lodge was cozy, well-designed, and mosquito-free, with great coffee and local food — an ideal base for gorilla trekking. In Queen Elizabeth, we had four full days of game drives. I like to go hard on photography, so we were out from sunrise to sunset. One major perk with GoExplore is you can plan your own drive schedule within park hours (6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). On our first day, we stayed until closing — the only car left in Kasenyi Plains. That kind of flexibility made a huge difference. I also recommend the optional lion and leopard tracking. You’re still in your private vehicle, but a tracker joins you and leads off-road directly to the cats. We spent nearly four hours with a leopard and her cubs in a cactus tree — truly a dream scenario for any photographer. Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale was another highlight. The chimps came down from the trees and moved through the forest, and we followed them. The one-hour viewing stretched to 2.5 hours. For photography, it’s better to wait until they’re on the ground — the real action happens there. On the final day, we went to Mabamba Swamp to see the Shoebill. From a photography standpoint, it’s the best place in Africa to photograph this rare bird. The canoe brings you to water level, with clean backgrounds and soft light — a perfect setup. Uganda in late May was lush, green, and surprisingly dry — just one short rainstorm. The scenery, wildlife, and people made it a beautiful place to explore. If you’re considering Uganda, book with GoExplore — and if you can, request Mozes. His experience and attention to detail made the entire trip not just productive, but truly enjoyable. Huge thanks to Brian and Mozes for making it all happen!"
"Lovely destination Uganda we selected GoExplore Safaris because their budget was affordable and they were so fast and quick at responding to our emails and all the questions. Elephants, giraffe, deer, antelope, warthogs, hippopotamus, crocodiles, hyena, lion, beautiful birds, and a leopard. It was incredible! The boat rides up the Nile to Murchison Falls is a must do and a perfect way to end the tour. I Did not have any Idea on how beautiful Uganda is. wow, I highly recommend GoExplore Safaris and travel for anyone who is interested in adventuring Uganda and Rwanda to its fullest."
"Our Rwanda trip trip from gorilla trekking in volcanoes just got done and now settled back home we were lucky to have attended the gorilla ceremony and the team was able to atleast show us why this was a big day for Rwanda it was such a coincidence to have travelled this beautiful country while they were naming the gorillas great thing to do I advise you to look for goexplore brian will take you to Kigali for this event."
