Does Botswana Require a Visa for US Citizens on Safari? No. US citizens do not need a visa for tourism or safari visits to Botswana, including stays of up to 90 days, according to Botswana’s embassy guidance and current travel information. Botswana is in Southern Africa, and travelers can plan routes through Maun or Kasane in 2026.
Botswana gives US safari travelers a simple entry rule: no tourist visa is required for visits up to 90 days. [3] That answer removes one major planning task, but you still need to check your passport, flights, health advice, and safari route before departure.
Botswana is a landlocked country in the Southern Hemisphere. [1] Its best-known safari areas include the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, and the Makgadikgadi region. Many visitors fly into Maun for delta trips or Kasane for Chobe and Victoria Falls connections.
This guide explains the visa rule in plain English. It also answers related questions about safari costs, vaccines, Maun, Kasane, and Botswana versus Tanzania. The advice reflects information available in July 2026.
Botswana does not require US citizens to obtain a tourist visa for a safari visit. The Embassy of the Republic of Botswana in Washington, D.C., lists the United States among countries whose citizens do not require a visa to enter Botswana. [3] This rule applies to normal tourism visits, including safari travel.
US citizens can enter Botswana for tourism without applying for a tourist visa in advance. A current travel guide states that US travelers may visit visa-free for stays of up to 90 days. [8] Therefore, a short safari holiday usually does not need a visa application, embassy appointment, or pre-trip tourist visa.
Safari travel does not create a separate visa category for ordinary holiday visitors. A Botswana safari is still tourism when you visit game reserves, stay at a lodge, join a mobile camp, or take a guided wildlife drive. However, work, study, journalism, or long stays may follow different rules.
The 90-day limit matters because travelers must match their plans to their permitted stay. Count the full trip, including time spent in Botswana before or after the safari. If your itinerary includes another country, check that country’s entry rules separately.
Visa-free entry makes Botswana easier to add to a Southern Africa itinerary. You can focus on flights, internal transfers, camp bookings, and travel insurance instead of a standard tourist visa application. Still, visa-free does not mean document-free. Border officials can apply entry rules at the point of arrival.
Botswana’s official embassy guidance is the best starting point for US travelers. [3] The US Department of State also provides a current Botswana travel advisory page for wider travel planning. [1] Check both sources again before departure because immigration rules can change.
Compare verified Botswana safari packages for your 2026 travel dates and review routes before you choose flights.
US citizens do not need a tourist visa for a Botswana safari, but entry planning still needs care. The key task is to confirm your travel purpose, stay length, route, and current border instructions before departure. Your operator can help explain transfers, but official immigration guidance should remain your final reference.
Botswana safari itineraries often combine several places. A traveler may enter through Maun, travel to the Okavango Delta, then continue toward Kasane. Another traveler may arrive in South Africa and cross into Botswana by land. Each route can involve different border points and onward travel rules.
US citizens should separate Botswana’s entry rule from the rules of neighboring countries. A visa-free Botswana visit does not automatically grant entry to South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, or Zimbabwe. Check each country when your itinerary crosses a border.
Botswana is landlocked and sits in Southern Africa. [1] That location makes regional flight and road planning important. A safari package may include domestic flights, charter aircraft, road transfers, or border transfers. Read the inclusions before paying a deposit.
Some travel guidance discusses arrival and electronic visa routes for Botswana. [6] However, US citizens normally do not need either option for a standard tourist safari. Treat those routes as possible options for travelers whose nationality or trip purpose requires a visa, not as a necessary step for most US holiday visitors.
Rules can change between the time you book and the time you fly. Save the Botswana embassy page, the travel advisory, and your operator’s entry notes. Recheck them close to departure. This simple habit helps you avoid relying on an old blog post or a social media comment.
A stay beyond 90 days needs separate advice. The visa-free tourist rule does not cover an unlimited stay. Contact the Botswana embassy or the relevant immigration authority before booking a long trip, extended volunteer visit, work placement, or study program.
Tour operators can explain what their package includes, but they cannot replace official immigration advice. Ask for written details about border crossings, transfer points, and planned nights in Botswana. Keep those details with your flight and accommodation records.
Maun is the main base for many Okavango Delta safaris. Kasane is a common base for Chobe National Park and regional travel. Both places can work well, but your choice depends on the parks, camps, and flight network in your itinerary.
Read this practical guide to Botswana safari tours for first-timers before you select a route. It can help you compare the number of nights, transfer needs, and wildlife areas.
There is no single Botswana safari price for US citizens in 2026. The total cost depends on camp style, safari length, flights, transfers, season, and whether you travel privately or in a group. Compare package details instead of judging an itinerary by its headline price alone.
The supplied visa sources do not provide a verified 2026 safari price range. Therefore, this guide does not invent a dollar figure. SafariFind listings can help you compare current package prices, durations, operator ratings, and inclusions in one place.
Botswana safari costs often reflect the type of experience you choose. A remote Okavango Delta camp may use a charter flight. A Chobe itinerary may use a road transfer from Kasane. A private vehicle changes the cost again. Meals, park fees, drinks, transfers, and flights may or may not be included.
Ask these questions before comparing two offers:
SafariFind connects travelers with verified tour operators and authentic traveler reviews. Request a quote from verified Botswana safari operators to compare the real inclusions behind each price.
Botswana and Tanzania offer different safari styles. Botswana is known for the Okavango Delta, water-based activities in suitable areas, Chobe wildlife, and smaller camps. Tanzania is known for the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Great Migration.
Budget also shapes the decision. A traveler seeking the lowest possible price should compare transport, camp level, and group size in both countries. A traveler seeking a remote, small-camp trip may prefer Botswana’s style. The best choice depends on your wildlife goals and budget.
Use this detailed comparison of Botswana vs Tanzania safari options to weigh wildlife, cost, and value. Then check current SafariFind packages rather than relying on broad country averages.
Start your Botswana safari preparation with three checks: entry rules, health advice, and route logistics. US citizens usually avoid a tourist visa application, but they still need a careful travel plan. Book the right airport, understand transfers, and ask a travel clinic about personal health needs.
The answer depends on your health history, itinerary, season, and countries visited before Botswana. The supplied visa sources do not provide a current vaccine list. Speak with a travel-health professional and check official health guidance before your trip rather than using a general internet checklist.
Travelers often ask, “What vaccines do you need for Botswana?” The safe answer is personal medical advice, not one universal list. Your clinician can review routine vaccines, destination risks, medicines, allergies, and the full Southern Africa route.
Do you need yellow fever for Botswana? The answer can depend on your recent travel history and route. The sources supplied for this article do not confirm a universal yellow fever requirement, so ask a travel clinic and verify entry guidance before departure.
This question matters when your flight connects through, or your itinerary includes, another country. Botswana’s rule for US tourists does not decide the health-document rules of every transit or neighboring country. Carry any required health certificate if an official source tells you to do so.
Maun is a practical base for Okavango Delta travel. Visitors can use it for safari transfers, lodge connections, local planning, and flights into remote camps. The exact activities depend on your package, available time, and operator schedule.
Read what to do in Maun, Botswana for seven basecamp ideas. Build in enough time for transfers. A rushed connection can reduce the value of a short safari.
Where is Kasane located in Botswana? Kasane is in northeastern Botswana, near Chobe National Park and the borders with several neighboring countries. It is a useful base for Chobe wildlife trips and regional itineraries that connect with Victoria Falls.
Kasane routes can suit travelers who want a shorter transfer into Chobe. Maun routes often suit travelers focused on the Okavango Delta. Your operator should explain how you move between airports, lodges, parks, and border points.
The right Botswana safari route depends on your main wildlife area, available days, and transfer budget. Choose Maun for an Okavango Delta focus, Kasane for Chobe, or a longer route when you want more than one landscape. A verified operator can turn those goals into a clear plan.
Maun works well for travelers who want the Okavango Delta at the center of their trip. Delta itineraries may involve lodge transfers and charter flights, so check flight times and baggage limits with your operator. The package should state whether those costs are included.
Delta travel suits visitors who enjoy water channels, wide floodplains, and remote camp settings. Conditions and activities vary by area and season. Ask whether your itinerary includes game drives, boat trips, mokoro-style activities, or a mix.
Kasane suits travelers who want access to Chobe National Park and a practical gateway in northeastern Botswana. It can also fit a wider Southern Africa route. Confirm whether your package includes road transfers, park activities, and any border crossing.
Chobe trips appeal to visitors who want river landscapes and strong wildlife viewing. Your operator should explain the exact park area, activity schedule, and number of nights. These details matter more than a simple “Botswana safari” label.
Compare packages by matching like with like. A five-night lodge itinerary and a five-night mobile camping trip may have very different inclusions. Rating, review count, guide support, transfer plans, and cancellation terms all deserve attention.
| Name | Price | Duration | Rating | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Okavango Delta package | Check current listing | Set by package | Check verified reviews | Delta-focused travelers |
| Chobe package | Check current listing | Set by package | Check verified reviews | River and Chobe trips |
| Botswana multi-park package | Check current listing | Set by package | Check verified reviews | Longer safari holidays |
The table avoids made-up prices and ratings because no SafariFind package data was supplied for this article. Use current listings and authentic reviews when comparing operators. Find your perfect Botswana safari package by route and budget before making a final decision.
Best time to visit depends on the area and the experience you want. Water levels, wildlife movement, heat, rain, camp access, and flight schedules can affect the trip. Do not choose dates from a single countrywide rule.
Read the Botswana month-by-month safari guide for 2026 for a more detailed seasonal comparison. Then ask operators how your chosen dates affect activities and transport.
No. US citizens do not need a tourist visa for a Botswana safari. Botswana’s embassy lists the United States among countries whose citizens do not require a visa, and current travel guidance describes visa-free stays of up to 90 days. [3] [8]
No. Americans do not need a tourist visa for a normal Botswana holiday or safari visit. A travel guide for US visitors states that holiday travelers can visit Botswana visa-free for up to 90 days. [6] [8] Longer stays or non-tourist activities may require separate advice.
This article does not confirm the current rule for Canadian citizens. Visa policies depend on nationality and can change. Canadian travelers should check Botswana’s official immigration or embassy guidance before booking a safari.
There is no single vaccine list for every Botswana traveler. Health advice depends on your medical history, route, transit countries, and activities. Ask a travel-health professional and verify current official guidance before departure.
The answer can depend on your travel history and route. The supplied sources do not confirm a universal requirement for all US safari travelers. Ask a travel clinic and check current entry guidance, especially when your trip includes another country.
Maun is a base for Okavango Delta safari transfers, lodge connections, local planning, and flights to remote camps. Travelers can use Maun as the start or end of a Delta route. Your package determines the activities and transfer schedule.
Use SafariFind to compare verified safari packages, operator details, and authentic reviews. You can review route plans and request quotes before choosing a Botswana safari that fits your dates and budget.
US citizens do not need a tourist visa for a Botswana safari, and current guidance allows visa-free visits of up to 90 days. [3] [8] That simple rule makes Botswana an easy choice for a Southern Africa holiday, but good planning still matters.
Choose Maun if the Okavango Delta is your main goal. Choose Kasane if you want Chobe National Park and a northeastern route. Ask a travel-health professional about vaccines and yellow fever documents for your full itinerary. Also confirm every border crossing before you fly.
Safari prices are not one fixed number. Camp type, flights, transfers, season, and group size shape the final cost. Compare package inclusions and read authentic reviews before paying a deposit.
Compare verified safari packages on SafariFind, request quotes from trusted operators, and plan your 2026 Botswana adventure with current information. As July 2026 planning continues, a careful document check can leave more time for wildlife, water, and wide open skies.

"On 10.9. until 1.10. In 2023, I went on a trip to Botswana, Zimbabwe and a short visit to Zambia with my clients - friends. I carefully prepared the trip in cooperation with the manager of Cultural Vibes Travel & Tours, Mr. Tongesai Mutematsaka. After arriving in Gaborone we organized a short tour of the city ourselves and met Tongesai in Maun. Tongesai was our driver and guide practically the whole way. We visited the Okavango River Delta and its surroundings (Moremi Reserve, Mokoro boat cruise, flight over the Okavango Delta. This was followed by a visit to the Makgadikgadi Salt Flats, then the Elephant Sands area and in Botswana Chobe National Park with a cruise on the Chobe River. Then we crossed to Zimbabwe, which was the main part of our journey. In the Victoria Falls area, we visited the Monde settlement, took a helicopter flight over Victoria Falls, followed by a cruise on the Zambezi River as part of a visit to the national park of the same name. We also walked past Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side and had a Boma dinner in the evening (too much of a "tourist thing"). On the Zambian side of the falls we saw white rhinos in Mosi - oa - Tunya National Park, then visited the museum in Livingstone and walked the Zambian side of the falls. From Victoria Falls, we headed to Hwange National Park, where we had a beautiful program - a safari, and after Hwange, there was also a very interesting program in Matobo National Park (there, among other things, white rhinos (a mother with her little daughter), beautiful rock formations and prehistoric cave drawings. The next place visited was Khami with very interesting buildings, and then we visited the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, which are among the most important world monuments. This was followed by a visit to the Chinhoya Karst and finally the gallery in Harare. I would also like to comment on the provision of services: Accommodation in the hotels was at the standard, expected level, only the service at the Great Zimbabwe Hotel was rather lazy. Accommodation in lodges - very good and the best accommodation was in Iganyana tented camp in Hwange National Park, mainly due to the extraordinary professionalism and very friendly attitude of the staff there towards us, the visitors. I must also highly praise all the local guides we met everywhere, e.g. in Chobe, Hwange and Matobo National Parks. I want to emphasize that this journey is one of the most interesting that I have made around the world. I believe that my clients - friends were also satisfied with the set. Thanks to the travel agency Cultural Vibes Travel & Tours and Mr. Tongesai Mutematsaka. I recommend Cultural Vibes Travel & Tours to anyone considering a trip to Zimbabwe."

"I spent a week in Botswana with cultural vibes, travels & tours and had not a single dull moment. The hotels/lodges we stayed at were very clean and service was professional. On the drives I had good conversations with the tour operator as he taught me a lot about the culture and about all the different animals (which we saw a lot of). Overall I had a great experience and would definitely book again."

"Tongesai was awesome from the start. I knew he was a good tour operator because he answered all of my questions in a timely manner and no question was ever stupid. Everything was just as he said once we arrived and really it was better. We prepared for about a year in advance for this trip and the tour operator was instrumental and making this trip a success. I highly recommend this tour operator to anyone who wants to visit Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana. Give Tongesai a call or email, and you will 100% not be disappointed. I have a very deep understanding of border crossing and transportation challenges in many African countries at this point because of the efforts of the tour operator. This makes my wife and I have very comfortable to approach another visit or look at visiting a different African country."

"We went on a 3 day safari, and even though Tongesai did not lead it himself, I want to highly recommend his services. Our group consisted of just my family; my wife, children (9, 13, 14), and me. Tongesai acted as the agent, coordinating with the organization in Botswana that ran the actual tour. He met us several days in advance, and had informed us of some critical information (like make sure to bring birth certificates for the kids) well in advance. On the first day of the Safari, he came to pick us up, and drove us to the border, where he coordinated a smooth hand over to the Botswana organization. The guide from our safari was so good! ‘Cobra’ grew up in the bush, and if shows. He was frequently coordinating with, and showing other tour guides where to find the best big game sightings. We saw so many animals, including lions, hippos, tons of elephants and giraffes, and too many other animals to name. The meals were also great! Cobra and Tongesai had contracted with ‘chef K’ for catered breakfast, lunch and dinner at the camp. All meals were great. And the camp itself was organized above my expectations. Very nice tents, raised cots, plenty warm, tables, chairs and napkins at every meal! All in all, the experience was pretty unforgettable. It’s not a cheap experience, but based on our trip I can highly recommend Tongesai’s services!"
